"It is a curious fact that in Western societies the practice of mothers, fathers, and infants sleeping together came to be thought of as strange, unhealthy and dangerous. Western parents are taught that co-sleeping will make the infant too dependent on them, or risk accidental suffocation. Such views are not supported by human experience worldwide, however, where for perhaps millions of years, infants as a matter of course slept next to at least one caregiver, usually the mother, in order to survive." -James J. McKenna

Any pregnant people who get/got free samples of formula in the mail- I know the unsolicited product is not always welcome when you plan to breastfeed- but keep them! Donate them! The baby formula shortage right now is a real crisis.

Please consider donating to this campaign. This well deserving mama needs community support to achieve her goal of a home birth. Access to midwifery care for women with disabilities is so important! I wish we lived in a medical culture that supported this choice by default, but instead, my hope is that community support will fill in the gap.

Thanks for taking the time to consider donating to my Go-Fund-Me campaign. If you … Priscilla Schatz needs your support for Priscilla’s Successful Home Birth

This is really important news. Avoid Tylenol during pregnancy.

https://www.foxnews.com/science/pain-reliever-acetaminophen-higher-risk-autism-adhd

Researchers in Spain uncovered data that suggests a potential link between prenatal exposure to the common drug acetaminophen and increased risk for higher instances of autism and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, according to the results of a study published Friday.

People often ask me how long I typically wait to clamp and cut the cord. The answer is that usually it is a very low priority after the birth. After the placenta is delivered, and after you’ve had your golden hour, then we get around to cutting the cord.

We now know that it is better to allow a baby time to regulate its own blood volume and take the blood that it needs from the placenta after birth.
🩸
Early cord clamping can lead to increased rates of anaemia and decreased neurological (brain) development.
🩸
It is crucial that a baby is allowed to complete their own transition to optimal condition outside the uterus without any interference from cord clamping.
🩸
But not all babies are equal and some will need more time than others. Each baby’s transition from intrauterine life to extrauterine life is a very individual process.
🩸
For this reason, it is not always helpful to use arbitrary time limits to determine how long to wait before clamping and cutting the cord.
🩸
Unless there is a problem (such as a tear in the cord or the mother is bleeding heavily), it may be better to watch the condition of the baby than to use arbitrary time limits.
🩸
People may find it helpful to use the phrase “wait for white” to describe how the cord looks white and floppy once the transition is complete and the baby has adjusted to life outside the womb.

This Oregon bill needs our support!

This Oregon bill needs our support!

Calling all moms, parents, midwives, and midwifery supporters!

Do you want to help increase access to midwifery care in Oregon?
Please write a letter in support of House Bill 2388 and submit it through the Oregon Legislative Information System (OLIS) testimony portal by 3 PM on Wednesday, February 24th at: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2021R1/Testimony/HHC

The first hearing of the bill will be Thursday, February 25th and we want legislators on the House Committee on Health Care to hear from you before then!

How to write your letter:

Address your letter correctly
“Dear Chair Prusak and Members of the House Health Committee,”
Letters should be sent to the House Health Committee members by submitting through the online portal: https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2021R1/Testimony/HHC

Keep it simple and no more than one page
Don’t introduce complex issues such as the HERC (OHP) coverage guidelines on out-of-hospital or VBAC that are beyond the scope of this bill.

Introduce yourself and what you want in the first sentence or two
For example:
I am a mother of two in Albany and had both my babies at home with midwives. I am writing to ask you to vote yes on HB 2388 to improve access to midwifery care.
-OR-
I am a midwife and small business owner in Bend and have been in practice for 9 years. Please vote yes on HB 2388 so that the mothers I work with can have insurance coverage for the safe and cost-effective care I provide.

Focus on 2 or 3 of the following key points and share your personal story
• Midwives provide excellent and safe care: Share your personal story of midwifery care)
• Midwifery care provides large cost savings to insurers and health systems but many families still can’t access midwifery care because about half of Oregon insurers (both private and OHP) provide limited or no coverage for birth center or home birth midwifery care: Share your personal story of insurance barriers to midwifery care and the cost of midwifery care.
• HB 2388 would increase access to midwifery care for Oregon families whether they choose to give birth in hospital, birth center, or home with Licensed Direct-Entry Midwives, Certified Nurse Midwives, or Naturopathic Physicians: Share your personal story of what improved access to midwifery care would mean to you or your community.

In closing, repeat your request and express gratitude
For example:
Please vote yes on HB 2388 so that all Oregon families have access to midwifery care. Thank you for the work you do to support the health of mothers and babies.

Include your full name and address with zip code
Include your credentials if you have them (LDM, CNM, ND etc)

That’s it!
Thank you for raising your voice and making a difference on this important issue.
