Last week, Global Neurosciences Institute attended the Society of University Neurosurgeons (SUNS) meeting in beautiful Puerto Rico, where Dr. Erol Veznedaroglu was honored with the Ken & Margie Smith Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Kenneth Liebman and Dr. Mandy Binning also represented GNI at the conference. Dr. Veznedaroglu presented on our innovative service line model—where interdisciplinary teams round together at the bedside to improve communication, streamline care, and drive better patient outcomes.

🧠 Team GNI at the 2025 Head for the Cure 5K – Philadelphia!

This morning, Global Neurosciences Institute proudly joined the inaugural Head for the Cure 5K at the Navy Yard — running in unity with patients, families, and advocates to raise awareness and support for brain tumor research.

We’re especially grateful to Dr. Atom Sarkar and Dr. Tina Loven for representing GNI with heart and energy. And a huge thank you to Dr. Sarkar for helping our team raise over $9,000 for this important cause. 💙

🎹 Billy Joel recently revealed his diagnosis with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) — bringing national attention to a condition many people have never heard of.

🧠 Not All Dementia Is Irreversible

Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) is a rare, often overlooked, but treatable cause of dementia-like symptoms.

As shared by Dr. Atom Sarkar ():

“Dementia is a global problem for patients and their caregivers. While the greatest risk factor for developing dementia is aging, it is NOT a normal part of aging. Vascular dementia, Parkinson’s dementia, and of course Alzheimer’s disease/dementia are subtypes of a clinical diagnosis characterized by progressive decline in cognitive function.”

“Unfortunately, there is little to revert such a progressive degenerative disease. That being said, a syndrome called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus — which medical students mnemonic recount as ‘Wacky, Wet, Wobbly’ — is a critical diagnosis to discern for any patient with progressive cognitive decline, bladder incontinence, and gait difficulty.”

“The key to recognizing NPH is that it is actually a reversible dementia, with a surgical solution. While less than 5% of dementias are NPH, identifying such a patient is critical — as a ventricular-peritoneal shunt surgery can be life-altering.”

On this Memorial Day, we stand united with our GNI neurology colleague, CPT Rubye Bardouille, Battalion PA-C of Unit HHT, 1-102D CAV of the New Jersey Army National Guard.

Today, we join her in reflection, remembrance, and honor of her fellow servicemembers — and all who gave their lives in service to our country.

Let us never forget their ultimate sacrifice for our protection and freedom — and the families who carry that loss with strength and grace.
