It’s the question everyone’s asking 👇
Robotics are already in the operating room, but not as replacements.

They’re tools of precision, designed to extend human capability, not remove it.

The surgeon plans every angle, every screw path, every move.

The robot simply helps execute that plan with sub-millimeter accuracy.

At the Seattle Science Foundation, we teach surgeons how to integrate robotics safely and effectively; because the future of surgery isn’t about man versus machine.

It’s about mastering both.

What’s really inside your lower back 👇

🦴 The 12th rib: the last rib in your rib cage. It sits just above your lower back and helps protect your kidneys and upper abdominal organs.

💪 The quadratus lumborum muscle: runs from your 12th rib down to your hip bone (iliac crest). It helps you bend sideways and stabilize your spine with every step.

🧠 The psoas major (removed here): a powerful muscle that connects your spine to your thigh. It’s your main hip flexor, active every time you walk or climb stairs.

⚡ The nerves:

Subcostal nerve (just under the 12th rib): controls part of your abdominal wall.

Iliohypogastric & ilioinguinal nerves: run across your lower abdomen and groin.

Lateral femoral cutaneous nerve: gives feeling to the front and side of your thigh.

Femoral nerve: helps you straighten your leg.

Genitofemoral nerve: travels through the front of the psoas, supplying the inner thigh and groin area.

All these structures form part of the lumbar plexus, the wiring system that connects your brain to your legs.

3 Subtle things surgeons look for before operating: 👇

🧠 1. Landmarks
They trace invisible lines: ribs, vessels, and nerves — mapping their route millimeter by millimeter.

⚙️ 2. Angles
Every incision, every scope, every tool position must align perfectly with the anatomy.

💡 3. Flow
They visualize each step: anticipating challenges, planning how to adapt before the first cut.

Advance Your Skills in , and at the NYC-MISS 2025 Symposium!

The 19th New York City MIS, Endoscopy, Robotics, 3D Navigation, Augmented Reality, VR, and AI Spine Symposium, directed by Dr. Roger Härtl and Dr. Luiz Pimenta, will be held December 12–13, 2025 in New York City.

Organized by the Seattle Science Foundation, this case-based and hands-on program combines expert lectures, international faculty discussions, and lab training. Sessions will cover cutting-edge techniques in minimally invasive spine surgery, robotics, and emerging digital technologies. Friday’s program will take place at The Spiral (Hudson Yards), followed by Saturday’s hands-on cadaver lab at Weill Cornell Medicine. Designed for and practicing the symposium offers both a lectures-only track and a combined lecture-and-lab track.

Join Us on October 24th - 25rh for our 7th Annual Advances in Motion Preservation of the Spine Course.

The 7th Annual Advances in Preservation of the course provides an in-depth evaluation of current and emerging techniques in spine surgery used to preserve spinal mobility. Through demonstrations and instructional didactics, we teach the best evidence-supported practices surrounding disc motion preserving stabilization and techniques.
