Time. Capacity. Energy.
These are 3 things I needed to know BEFORE my first social work job.
1. Protect your time. There will always be something to do. Someone to talk to and possibly a crisis of the day. Create a schedule and rhythm that has defined start and finish times for the day. Advocate for Flex Time and to set your own schedule.
2. Manage your capacity. Although you may be faced with a range of challenges and people to meet with, you are not equipped (or trained) to handle everything. Pay attention to what you know and what you do not know. Seek and use supervision for support and protection in your clinical growth.
3. Practice good boundaries. Knowledge without application is not wisdom. Knowing you need to guard your schedule and manage your capacity are great. DOING these two things requires implementing boundaries across the board and within your life. Make it a point to practice assertiveness in your personal communication and watch those tools transfer into your professional life!
