About 15% of North Carolina’s population, including 19% of its children, experienced food insecurity in 2023 (Feeding America 2025). Every county in the state is affected, with rural areas often facing the highest rates. Building sustainable local and regional food systems that connect consumers to healthy foods and reduce waste through collaborative production, processing, and distribution networks is key to addressing this challenge.

This session will explore how local governments and their partners can strengthen food security systems in their communities. Dr. Maureen Berner of the UNC School of Government will provide a big-picture overview of food security in North Carolina, including what it is, why it matters, and key challenges and opportunities. Sam Springs from the High-Country Food Hub and Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture will offer a local perspective, sharing how food security work is being implemented on the ground and what other communities can learn from their efforts.

This webinar is free and open to the public as part of the Drivers of Change series, hosted by the UNC School of Government’s NC IMPACT Initiative through the Growing Practical Solutions for North Carolina (GPS NC) program.

Effective Partnerships in Public Health: A local approach to cross-sector collaboration

Public health lies at the intersection of health, environment, and other non-medical factors that affect health. To make real change, health departments need to find partners who bring different perspectives, expertise, and resources to the table. But while these partnerships are critical, they’re not always easy to initiate, and they can be even harder to sustain.

Join us for a webinar on Wednesday, July 23 at 1 PM ET where we will showcase real-world examples of health departments that have successfully engaged in cross-sector collaboration to tackle environmental health concerns like heat, flooding, and wildfire. Learn who they partnered with, how they sustained those partnerships, and the benefits those partnerships delivered.
