Often called the father of independent living, Ed Roberts believed people with disabilities should have the same choices and opportunities as anyone else.

In 1972, he helped establish the first Center for Independent Living in Berkeley, California, laying the foundation for what would become a national movement.

Founded in 1981, the Center for Accessible Living (CAL) became Kentucky’s first Independent Living Center, by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities. Today, we continue his mission to empower independence and inclusion across the state.
