Here are 3 misconceptions about :
🔸 ABA therapy is only for children with autism.
This is not true. ABA therapy can be used with people of all ages who have autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental disabilities. It can also be used with people who have behavioral challenges, such as those who have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
🔸 ABA therapy is all about compliance and control.
This is also not true. ABA therapy is about teaching skills and reducing problem behaviors. It does not focus on forcing compliance or controlling the individual. Instead, ABA therapists use positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors. They also focus on teaching functional skills that will help the individual become more independent, such as communication, social skills, and daily living skills.
🔸 ABA therapy is "robotic" and makes people with autism less "autistic."
This is a misconception that is often based on outdated views of ABA therapy. Today, ABA therapy is highly individualized and tailored to the needs of the individual. It does not aim to make people with autism less "autistic." Instead, it aims to help them develop the skills they need to live happy and fulfilling lives.
