⛺ Summer camps are full of fun—and potential eye hazards.

From bug spray and sharp sticks to smoky campfires, it’s easy for young adventurers to irritate or injure their eyes.

Teach kids to avoid rubbing their eyes, and pack protective glasses for outdoor activities.

🏖️ Kids love the water—but chlorine and bacteria don’t mix well with young eyes.

Swim goggles help protect from irritants and prevent pink eye.

Bonus: they help your child see clearly while playing!

☀️ True or False?

Your eyes can get sunburned.

**TRUE!**

It’s called photokeratitis, and it can happen after just a few hours without UV protection.

Avoid it by wearing sunglasses labeled 100% UV protection.

🍓 Want to snack your way to healthy eyes?

Fruits rich in vitamin C and antioxidants—like blueberries, watermelon, and citrus—support your eye health.

So do leafy greens like spinach and kale.

📚 Reading outside this summer?

For your eyes' sake, early mornings or late evenings offer the best natural lighting.

Harsh midday sun can increase glare and eye fatigue—even with sunglasses.

When should I start having my child's eye exams?

Eye health is important your whole life, no matter how old—or young—you are.
Children’s eye care helps address eye and vision issues that could have consequences lasting into adulthood.

It’s more than just regular checkups to see if your child needs glasses; it’s about identifying and addressing problems before they have the chance to become long-lasting or serious. Read more here: https://f.mtr.cool/rrnojamqqc

Pool Time ≠ Safe Time for Contacts
🏊‍♀️ Contact lenses + swimming = risk of eye infection.

Whether it’s the pool, lake, or ocean—water can trap bacteria under contact lenses and lead to serious eye infections. If you swim regularly, talk to us about prescription goggles or daily lenses as a safer alternative. (616) 772-2020

🕶️ Not All Sunglasses Are Created Equal!

When it comes to protecting your eyes this summer, choosing the right sunglasses matters more than you might think. Here’s what to look for:

✔️ 100% UVA/UVB Protection – This is non-negotiable. UV rays can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration over time.

✔️ Polarized Lenses – Reduce glare from water, pavement, and glass. Perfect for driving, boating, or beach days.

✔️ Wraparound Frames – Block sunlight from the sides and provide added coverage.

✔️ Lens Color Myths – Dark lenses don’t always mean more protection. It’s the UV rating that counts, not the tint!

🛍️ Not sure what type fits your lifestyle best? Our optical team is here to help you choose the right pair—one that protects and looks great.

Our Story

Sight Eye Clinic has been an eye-health institute in the Holland, Zeeland, Hamilton, Hudsonville, and surrounding communities for decades. Originally founded in the 1930s by Dr. DeVries, the practice was in the center of the downtown Holland area. It was moved from 9th Street to a small building next to Holland Hospital in the 1970s. Under Dr. Don Dephouse, the practice expanded in the 1980s and continued to grow.

By the 2010s, Sight Eye Clinic had entirely outgrown its building, so in 2013, the practice moved to a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility on Van Hill Drive. With bright, open spaces and top-of-the-line in-office technology, our practice continues to grow and do whatever we can to better serve our patients.
