Tree is just now starting to put on her Fall dress with just a smidge of yellow leaves starting to appear. Beautiful temperatures this week was our gift. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. We have space both days. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

It is so nice doing chores without the heat. Sunday - after chores - I got Liber-T out for a ride. She was asking me for a ride all last week, but with all the rain, I didn’t want to take a chance she’d slip in the wet. So, today we got out and played on the home trail. Have to do some work to get it back in shape after last week’s rain. Played in the arena with freestyle touch it. Nice workout. Monday we got another 50 bales of hay delivered. Although we didn’t have to stack it ourselves, we did have to clean up the scrap and take care of usual chores. Tuesday was beautiful and the temperature was just right. Everleigh, Karen and Margie arrived to get Spirit and Liber-T ready. Everleigh had Spirit and Karen played with Liber-T. Everleigh played the ground games with Spirit as this was only the 2nd time she’s played with her. Karen played the games with Liber-T at obstacles. Nice work. Both mounted up. Everleigh’s first time on Spirit and worked on the obstacles mounted. This gives the riders and horses tasks to accomplish. Natalie arrived and mounted up on Liber-T. She worked on shape puzzle and is doing it more easily each week. They played with bean bags and the peg shape puzzle as well as practicing walk on and whoa at obstacles. They went over the hill, logs, stopped in the hoop and did 2 trail rides with Everleigh on Spirit joining the fun. Margie had a chance to hop on Liber-T before Cayden arrived and enjoyed doing some obstacle work with her. Cayden arrived and took Liber-T around the obstacles on line - over hill, onto tire, over logs, to various targets and stopping in the hoop. Mounted up, he and Everleigh rode various obstacles. They worked on a flower pattern, over the hill, logs, stop in hoop, cavaletti, each one taking turns on which obstacle to do next. Cayden did a little trotting at the end before enjoying a leap frog trail ride with Everleigh on Spirit. He then had to cuddle with Gracie and Dakota before heading out. Wednesday morning was drizzly and gave just enough to make surface slippery. AND - got office work to do in the afternoon. Thursday, however, was wonderful and I took Liber-T out for a nice workout. Saturday Lisa, Saanvi and Smitha arrived to get things rolling. We got Liber-T and Spirit out. Smitha and Saanvi played with Liber-T and Lisa played with Spirit. Oliver arrived and was ready to go. He reviewed and played his ground games with Liber-T and mounted up to review riding skills. He did the best focus for jousting he’s ever done and even though it’s a kid’s game, he still enjoyed playing with the toy food. It was great. So - off they went on a trail ride with him leading and Lisa on Spirit following. Woodrow arrived and was ready to go on Spirit. He did his riding positions with good posture. He also enjoyed playing with the toy food while working to practice walk on and whoa. Then we met Kaleb who was here for the first time. Craig came to help for this first ride. He mounted up on Liber-T and did really well finding his balance while she walked the arena. He dismounted and admitted he was tired. Ahhh - I was successful as that’s my job to get folks to working their bodies. It was a very nice first ride. He then wanted to meet Dakota and Gracie, so the gals met him at the barn and brought the girls out for a meet and greet. Finally, putting Liber-T and Spirit up and feeding the grain. Thank you everyone.

Our horses are crucial in our mission to provide therapeutic services to our clients and to keep them healthy and happy. AND - Although hay is in for the year, we will need to purchase more again next fall - so there is always a Hay Fundraiser. Thank you to those who have donated in the past. We purchase enough each fall for the year so we can get consistent quality hay. After rain on Saturday, then a 2" hail storm early Sunday morning AND another big storm on Monday afternoon, we had to cancel class Tuesday. BUT - temps the rest of the week were wonderful. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. We have space both days. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

There was no more rain Saturday, but 3:45 Sunday morning we got HAIL like I’ve never seen before. Very loud 2" hail stones fell and sounded like gun shots. Fortunately nothing was badly damaged. We ended up with 2" of rain. We could actually hear that Skunk Creek was running it was so loud. Got sunshine the rest of the day, but things were really wet and slippery all day. Thought it was over and we’d be able to ride on Tuesday. But, at 3:30 on Monday afternoon another storm hit and gave us another 1 7/8" of rain. More than 6" over the past 5 days. Everything is very VERY wet. Horses are OK and under cover. Tuesday morning I looked in the 30x30 pen and could only see Gracie and Spirit. Dakota decided to lay down in the mud and although she was standing up, she was covered, so she got a quick grooming - then there were 3. Liber-T is under cover in the 20x20. Needless to say, we could not ride on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday was still really squishy, so didn’t take any chances to hurt the horses and didn’t ride. It was hard because the temperature was finally PERFECT for riding. Thursday was dry enough, so I played with Dakota on line and rode Spirit. Trail was still pretty wet, so was careful. Spirit did well as I practiced having her stand beside the mounting steps and mounting ramp. Neutral and indirect rein are coming along nicely. She’s backing up better each time I ride. Nice workout this afternoon. Saturday was cool with a 42 on the porch at 6:30 AM. It was beautiful and sunny, a great day to ride. Lisa and Smitha arrived and got busy with chores. Then Smitha got Liber-T and Lisa got Spirit ready. They did ground games with a purpose nicely and mounted up. We had time this morning, so they got a trail ride in before Woodrow came to ride. This was his first time back since July, and he’s gotten taller. Kids do that of course - that’s the plan. He got on Spirit and did a great job. He was sitting up very tall, did well with doing positions. He worked with the shape puzzles, bean bags, rings and asking Spirit to “whoa” by pulling the neck rope. Nice riding today.

The only mistake is to not learn from it. - Karen Rohlf

Still somewhat warm, but things are cooling down. Had 45 on the porch last Sunday. Got more rain for the weekend. Now we need the rain to stop. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. We have space both days. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

Sunday dawned cool with 45 degrees on our porch at 7 AM. FINALLY. After chores I got Liber-T out for a ride. I kept is quiet as she’s not worked for a couple of weeks due to rain and other responsibilities that needed attention. Monday we got our second delivery of 50 bales of hay. Tuesday I met Jim, new volunteer, and I was glad as he was the only one to come for class. But, Natalie just loved it and had a great ride doing trail rides, over the ground pole, over the cavaletti, good shape puzzle placement, bean bag tossing, ring placement and jousting. Lots of giggling today. Wednesday our sage bloomed out. There were no flowers on it Tuesday evening, but Wednesday morning she was all dressed up in beautiful purple flowers. After doing chores, I picked mud from most everyone’s hooves. Then, played with Gracie, who did very well with her games, stay with me and lots of nice circling. Now it was Spirit’s turn. Took her to the arena to play with the mounting steps there. Although she does well with the mounting steps by the pen, these are in a different place and that makes it - different. But - she was great and stepped up to the mounting steps both while I was on the steps and when I asked her from the ground. In the arena had her circle on the 12' without using the carrot stick and she maintained gait and direction with good 180 turns. So, got her on the 22' line and did more circling, 180's at walk, trot and canter. We headed to the mounting ramp for some work there. She sidled up to it quite well while I was on the ground and while I was on the ramp. She sure seems to really enjoy the play time we have together. We did have a very nice sunset to enjoy at the end of the day. Thursday dawned quite clear and sunny. But, by the time chores were finished, there were clouds and gusty winds. So, although the plan was to ride Gracie, I decided to make preparations for all this rain that was predicted. And rain it did. We got ½" on Friday and 1 3/4" early Saturday. It is VERY SQUISHY and wet everywhere. BUT - the day is not yet done, we could get more. Needless to say, no one came to ride today. The rain took the flowers from the sage. Glad I got pictures the other day. Fog at New River Mesa. Stay dry everyone.

Temps were definitely better this, our third week of classes. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. We have space both daysPlease - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

Just when we thought the rain was over and things were drying out by Saturday evening, later we got another ½" of rain making everything very very wet again. First delivery of hay came Monday morning. Nice having strong young men to stack the hay. Three more deliveries next 3 Mondays. Tuesday, Everleigh and Margie came and got Liber-T and Spirit prepped. Everleigh played on line with Liber-T and rode quite a bit at a trot. Nice. Margie played with Spirit on line and had her step up on tire, circle tire and do some point to point. She didn’t have time to mount up though. Darn! Natalie arrived and mounted right up on Liber-T. She did a warm-up round and some bean bag tossing, then headed out for a trail ride. Back in the arena, she rode over the hill, logs, stopped at targets, did jousting, nice work with peg and shape puzzles and some distance bean bag tossing before ending up with a second trail ride. Cayden arrived and worked on line with Liber-T. He had her go over the hill, step up on the tire, stop with front, then back feet in hula hoop and stop half way over the cavaletti. Mounted up he practiced target work, had Liber-T step up on the tire (first time with a client mounted - COOL!) and did more trotting. He was sitting up better this week and did 5 steps, then walk. Nice. He finished with a trail ride, then rode to the pen where he enjoyed giving Gracie scratches. AND she enjoyed receiving the attention. Didn’t get a chance to ride this week as it was first of the month chores and it was still a bit hot. Saturday dawned beautiful and cool. Lisa, Saanvi, Smitha and new volunteer, Katie, came and got Spirit, Dakota and Liber-T out to play. Smitha showed Katie the start of the ground games while Lisa played with Spirit and Saanvi played with Dakota. Lisa, Saanvi and Katie all mounted up. Dakota was very sore with the rain causing her thin soles to be - sore. Saanvi took her back to the pen early. Meanwhile, Lisa rode Spirit and did some nice circles and trotting. Katie rode Liber-T. This was the first time in a long time she’s been able to ride - and then we challenged with ba****ck. She did great. They hopped off and Smitha and Saanvi hopped on Liber-T and Spirit. They finished up with a trail ride. NICE.

Our second week of classes had riders eager to ride after a couple of weeks off. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

Busy first part of week and couldn’t ride. Well - it also rained, so things were quite wet and slippery. Tuesday, Karen and Everleigh arrived and got Liber-T and Spirit out to play. Temperature was still warm, but not as warm as it has been. Finally, I think temps are coming down. I did chores, of course. We headed off to the arena, both gals worked on their ground games, but with obstacles today, just to spice things up. Nice for Karen to get Liber-T on the tire, stepping in the hoop and doing touch it games with obstacles. Everleigh had Spirit doing nice stay with me, stop in the hoop and touch it. But not to touch barrels with items on top as Spirit likes to taste everything. Spirit headed back to the pen when Natalie arrived and mounted up on Liber-T. After Natalie did a warm-up ride around the arena she headed out for a trail ride. The trail ride helps her - and Liber-T - get more engaged. Also, there were workers on the south property which distracted Natalie since men and machines working are just so much fun to watch. She did the peg puzzle game with some assistance to find the right pegs. She caught, placed and tossed beanbags. Rode over the hill, logs and cavaletti doing some whoa, walk on and turns. She finished with another trail ride - her favorite. Cayden arrived and he used the ground games with obstacles with Liber-T. Over the hill, stop in the hoop, step up on the tire and stay with me. He then mounted up and after his warm-up ride did a trail ride. Back in the arena he practiced turns using slow motion keeping Liber-T from pulling. It works much better that way. He rode over the hill, logs, cavaletti and at the end did his first time trotting. The first few steps - which Liber-T will do then walks again with new trotters, were a bit of a surprise to Cayden. Then he got into the rhythm and was able to do longer and longer trotting steps, all while wearing a big smile. He also did a walking dismount. Good coordination, planning and balance for that to work well. Wednesday was windy so a work in the office day. Thursday also was windy with a definite change in the weather. We did have a pretty sunset cloud to enjoy. Friday started rainy and it rained and RAINED all day long and into the night, so canceled volunteers to come Saturday morning. There were pretty sunset clouds and a full double rainbow Friday evening. Canceling was a good thing, as early Saturday morning and just before I finished doing chores, the sky opened up and we got a drenching rain. I was 10 minutes too late getting chores done and got stuck in the pen with the horses as rain came down heavy. It let up a bit and I headed to the house before it came down hard again. We do need the rain, but not on class days please.

“Good judgement comes from experience, and a whole lot of that comes from bad judgement.” - Mark Twain

The first week of classes is in the books. Unfortunately, none of our riders were able to participate due to - stuff. I’ve had contacts on at least 3 folks wanting to ride with us, but until they commit, we are in a holding pattern. I know some regular riders will be back soon and we look forward to seeing them again. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

Temperatures not too bad this week. Got Spirit out for a workout on Sunday morning. She is doing so well and getting better and better each time she’s ridden. Today we worked in the pen and did all 7 games. Yo-yo and sideways are still weak, but improving. Then mounted up and did home trail on a soft feel rein. Worked in the arena with neutral rein, indirect rein to yield her hindquarters, short-long walking and circles to stretch out her stride. Trot was better today. All felt really connected, so I bent her head around, untied the reins and rode with only 1. Flipping back and forth didn’t bother her. I asked for walk and trot and circles. Very calm and nice. Retied the reins for the home trail back to the pen as I didn’t want to push the success we had achieved. Tuesday was a bust for riders as they were either sick or had appointments. But, volunteers came to play and ride the horses. Thursday I was all set to ride Dakota and before I could get the pens cleaned, it started to rain. It rained on and off all day. Got some really close lightning strikes and rain early Friday morning. It was a mess doing chores. So did errands in the morning and got to drive in a very VERY hard thunderstorm on the 101. Haven’t done that in many years. Saturday, Lisa, Saanvi and Smitha came to play. After chores, Lisa got Spirit, Saanvi got Dakota and Smitha got Liber-T. Since we didn’t have riders, they worked on their horsemanship skills. They all did ground games 1-5, some point to point to get connected and all had their horse step up on the tire pedestal. Saanvi had to work on it a bit because Dakota hasn’t done it much. But, with good focus and commitment, she got it to work. Was fun for her to see the moment Dakota understood and decided to step up. Liber-T and Spirit just stepped up easily. Meanwhile, we saw 13 vultures circling just north of us. Keep moving - they are looking for lunch. Mounted on their horses, the gals worked on neutral rein, riding point to point and circling barrels, ride over the hill, cavaletti and logs. It was fun. Each learned a few new things and got good practice. They finished up with a home trail ride.
