“Good judgement comes from experience, and a whole lot of that comes from bad judgement.” - Mark Twain

The first week of classes is in the books. Unfortunately, none of our riders were able to participate due to - stuff. I’ve had contacts on at least 3 folks wanting to ride with us, but until they commit, we are in a holding pattern. I know some regular riders will be back soon and we look forward to seeing them again. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

Temperatures not too bad this week. Got Spirit out for a workout on Sunday morning. She is doing so well and getting better and better each time she’s ridden. Today we worked in the pen and did all 7 games. Yo-yo and sideways are still weak, but improving. Then mounted up and did home trail on a soft feel rein. Worked in the arena with neutral rein, indirect rein to yield her hindquarters, short-long walking and circles to stretch out her stride. Trot was better today. All felt really connected, so I bent her head around, untied the reins and rode with only 1. Flipping back and forth didn’t bother her. I asked for walk and trot and circles. Very calm and nice. Retied the reins for the home trail back to the pen as I didn’t want to push the success we had achieved. Tuesday was a bust for riders as they were either sick or had appointments. But, volunteers came to play and ride the horses. Thursday I was all set to ride Dakota and before I could get the pens cleaned, it started to rain. It rained on and off all day. Got some really close lightning strikes and rain early Friday morning. It was a mess doing chores. So did errands in the morning and got to drive in a very VERY hard thunderstorm on the 101. Haven’t done that in many years. Saturday, Lisa, Saanvi and Smitha came to play. After chores, Lisa got Spirit, Saanvi got Dakota and Smitha got Liber-T. Since we didn’t have riders, they worked on their horsemanship skills. They all did ground games 1-5, some point to point to get connected and all had their horse step up on the tire pedestal. Saanvi had to work on it a bit because Dakota hasn’t done it much. But, with good focus and commitment, she got it to work. Was fun for her to see the moment Dakota understood and decided to step up. Liber-T and Spirit just stepped up easily. Meanwhile, we saw 13 vultures circling just north of us. Keep moving - they are looking for lunch. Mounted on their horses, the gals worked on neutral rein, riding point to point and circling barrels, ride over the hill, cavaletti and logs. It was fun. Each learned a few new things and got good practice. They finished up with a home trail ride.

Our horses are crucial in our mission to provide therapeutic services to our clients and to keep them healthy and happy. AND - Although hay is in for the year, we will need to purchase more again next fall - so there is always a Hay Fundraiser. Thank you to those who have donated in the past. We purchase enough each fall for the year so we can get consistent quality hay. The best time to purchase is at the end of summer when prices are lowest and the hay is freshest, so that’s when we do it. I don’t know what this year will bring, but we plan for $25 for 1 bale of hay. You can donate through Zelle to stableinfl@aol.com or send a check. PayPal works through our “Donate” button, but they do charge a processing fee of almost 3%, so less than what you donated comes to us. You can make a donation any time and receive dollar for dollar tax credit on your AZ State taxes for 2025. Again, the best way is with a check or through Zelle and stableinfl@aol.com. We are an Arizona Qualified Charitable Organization (QCO) and a donation will reduce your AZ State Taxes. Use QCO Code 22306 on Form 321 to receive a tax credit on your AZ State taxes - for 2025 up to $470 for a single person and $938 for couples. For all you Fry’s VIP shoppers, please sign up at Fry’s Rewards choosing Code and Fry’s will donate to Stable Influence. We get almost $400/year from Kroger each year. Shopping on the web? Go through iGive.com or GoodShop.com e-malls, choose to support Stable Influence through your on-line purchases. The e-mall merchants will donate a percentage of the purchases to us. You still get great prices, and we get a bonus. It’s a Win Win. THANKS!

The loan we had to get for a new car for Stable Influence is shrinking. But, it’s still not fully funded. So - Fundraiser - A car for Stable Influence is still out there. Hope you all had a good Labor Day. I headed to Colorado to visit friends the past week and am back and scheduling riding for our regular classes beginning next week - September 14. So, if you are interested or know someone who would like to start riding with us or volunteering - contact us ASAP so we can get the ball rolling. Riding will be on Tuesday afternoons and on Saturday mornings. All riding will be in New River. Spread the word and please help find a few more great volunteers and riders to join the fun. Please - Please - let me know if you will not be able to come and help so I can properly schedule. Thanks.

With hot temps again Labor Day weekend and me prepping for Colorado trip, I didn’t ride. Just packed and planned. Headed to Cortez, CO on Wednesday. Travel was through the edge of Monument Valley, saw the “Baby Rocks” and face in the ridge formations. Beautiful scenery. In Cortez I met up with my long time past volunteer and good horsie friend Chris. We had a nice visit, saw deer on her place and rested from the long drive. Thursday, after a nice breakfast, I headed to Pagosa Springs to meet with another long time horsie friend, John. We enjoyed exploring the sights in Pagosa Springs and had some very nice dinners at the condo. Met several other travelers at the condo meet and greet and enjoyed sharing stories. Enjoyed Pagosa Peak and a beautiful horse gate. Headed back to Cortez to visit for another couple of days before heading home on Tuesday. Sure enjoyed the peace of watching the deer grazing on Chris’ property. Wednesday was “find the office” task. Our accounting program got a glitch before my trip, so while I was gone, Craig has been busy working to solve it. Not there yet, but think we have a work around. AND they always said - computers will make everything so very easy. They do, if they work right. Worked on getting the accounting back to date. Still have some to do, but am getting it done. Friday all the horses got their feet trimmed. Saturday I took Liber-T out for a ride. It was nice getting back in the saddle with temps not so hot. See you next week.

A little step may be the beginning of a great journey.

As we finish up our last ride for the summer (hope so with the heat) we are scheduling riding for our regular classes beginning the week of September 14. Saturday evening we had a fun sunset. Sunday was still a very hot day. Thought I’d play a bit on the ground, but wiping the sweat from my eyes convinced me not to. There was a very pretty silver lining cloud at the end of the day. Monday early morning thunder and rain woke me up. It was still raining when I usually go out to do chores, so got out late. Lots of clouds, but cooler. Ride? ? ? Then the clouds started showing lightening, so that was a no-go. Didn’t get a lot of rain, but got some and cooler temps. Got spotty rain and lightning all day. Then at the end of the day a HUGE dust storm. It was amazing to watch it flow across the eastern mountains. Then it hit with lots of dust followed by a lot of rain. Got some pictures as it swallowed up New River Mesa. We got 1" here, but it was so fast it ran off. We were able to do class on Tuesday. Temps were quite nice for riding. Karen, Everleigh, Smitha and Margie all came to help. Everleigh played with Liber-T and did very well with first 4 games. Meanwhile, Smitha played with Spirit and has established a nice connection. Smitha did a nice circling game with Spirit today. Everleigh hopped on Liber-T and, using only 1 rein, was trotting all over the arena. Both she and Liber-T enjoyed it, marked by Everleigh’s smiling. She jumped off while Liber-T was walking - planned - and Liber-T stopped immediately. Just like she’s supposed to. Margie got on Spirit and asked her for circling and target riding. Cayden arrived and got to work grooming Liber-T. He’s getting a good rhythm with brushing. He also did well with games 1 and 2. Driving requires more specifics while asking with your hands and lead, but he’s getting it. He mounted up and worked on the obstacles. Meanwhile Karen got on Spirit for a few minutes. She needs more work with accurately reading her horse as Spirit isn’t as good at filling in the holes as Liber-T, but it was a good first time. Cayden finished his ride with a nice trail ride. Natalie was ready to go when she arrived and mounted up on Liber-T. She warmed up on the arena, but needed a trail ride. So off they went. Back to work in the arena, she did bean bag tossing, shape puzzle, go over the hill, logs, cavaletti and ground pole and a very nice jousting. She ended with a nice trail ride finishing up at the pens where she gave Gracie some nice scratching. Gracie smiled. We had an Arizona flag sunset, which is quite rare, but very nice to end the evening. Thursday, my accounting program got a bug, cold, or collapse. Craig is trying to restore and I cannot do anything much on the computer until he fixes it. Saturday, I got Liber-T out for a quick ride. Just tooling along on the home trail and in the arena playing with the obstacles. Later we lost power for about an hour. But, all is OK.

Next week is our last scheduled summer ride and it should be quite nice. Hope we don’t get the storms too early. As we finish up the summer - I hope - we are scheduling riding for our regular classes beginning the week of September 14. So, if you are interested or know someone who would like to start riding with us - contact us so we can get the ball rolling. Riding will be on Tuesday afternoon and on Saturday mornings. I got up early Sunday morning and saw all the planets in the eastern sky. Pretty cool stuff. Temps were pretty nice in the morning and I got Liber-T out for a ride. I just do things to help keep her fit and happy - trail ride, trot and do point to point in the arena, lateral work. Nice going. Monday was a “just love on them” day as I checked each horse and loved on them. Tuesday dawned cloudy and stayed cloudy all day, so it was OK to ride. Everleigh and Smitha came to get Liber-T and Spirit ready. Everleigh played with Liber-T and Smitha played with Spirit on line. Smitha didn’t ride, but is getting better and better at connecting with Spirit. Everleigh played on line, then mounted up. She rode with 1 rein learning to flip it back and forth and focus on going to a target. This is wonderful and helps develop a good riding feel. All looked good, so she did her first trotting. Quite nice. Cayden arrived and was ready to get going. He started by grooming Liber-T, then did ground games needing some reminders as it’s been a while with the high heat we’ve been having. AARG. He did well playing games 1-3 once coached. Mounted up, with just 1 rein, he did a great job turning and using his shoulders and focus well today. Worked on target practice and finished up with a trail ride. All the while the sun was setting and giving off a very red glow. Very interesting. Natalie was ready to go as soon as Cayden dismounted. So off she went for a warm-up ride around the arena. She did very well with the shape puzzle today, was good at asking Liber-T to whoa at targets and in the hoop. She enjoyed going over the hill and tossing beanbags. But the best thing today was 2 trail rides. One after her warm-up and one to end the ride. It was great to get back to riding again. Wednesday and Thursday were very hot with Extreme Heat Warnings both days. We did have pretty sunsets both days. There were some storms all around Thursday night, but only drops here. Friday, although predicted to be very hot, dawned cloudy, so was not too hot with a slight breeze. I jumped on the opportunity to give Spirit a good ride. She is doing so very well as I asked for riding to targets on a loose rein. I think she does this well because she’s looking for something to eat on the barrels, but - use what works. I asked for a lot of circles, yielding hindquarters is coming very nicely, yielding forehand has a good start, backing still needs work. She did a lot of trotting today and is truly extending her stride. She best enjoys trail riding, so we did some of that on the home trail as well. Later we had - almost - a sunset, but the clouds were not quite right. Saturday was bright, sunny, hot and no breeze in the morning, so just did chores and headed inside. Temps are to drop quite a bit for next week, so our last summer riding day should be quite nice.

Although there is an Extreme Heat Warning for Phoenix, we are on the very edge of that area and it was actually quite nice Sunday morning with a gentle breeze making it great and cloud cover. So after chores, I got Dakota out and did target on a loose rein exercise. She gets it. I just had to look at where I wanted to go and she went there and touched the barrel, cone, jousting stand, stump, tire pedestal - whatever. Then a few steps backwards, turn on the hindquarters and walk or trot to the next target on a loose rein. We went over the hill, over the logs, over the cavaletti, did neutral and direct rein turns. Finished up with a long home trail ride. Nice ride and was done by 9:30. Monday there was a lot of smoke from the Billy fire so couldn’t ride. Did see some meteors late in the night. Tuesday was hoping to be able to ride as previous predictions said we’d not be too hot. BUT, waking up the smoke was really bad again and the predictions raised the temp expectations. The smoke was so bad I was even having trouble. So, once again, we lost riding on Tuesday. It was a good thing I canceled. The cloud cover didn’t help with blocking the sun as it was in the east and then the wind started gusting pretty strong. We did have a pretty sunset, though. Wednesday started out pretty hot, so did chores, did some training with puppy Mars and lots of office stuff. AND enjoyed another pretty sunset and a cloud that looked (to me) like a horse. Didn’t get any rain though. Maybe in the next couple of days. Thursday was mostly sunny and got hot fast, so again decided riding would not be a good plan. Thursday night we got storms and 1 1/4" of rain, so things were pretty squishy Friday morning, not to mention very VERY humid. AND - to add to the fun, our neighbor had a tree limb fall on top of her car and called at 6 AM for help. We got the limb off and, surprisingly - thankfully, there was very minimal scratches on the car. By the time that was finished, we had to head out to get our Friday errands done. Saturday was again humid from storms all around Friday evening, but it was not too hot. Timing was bad as we greeted a gal who came to pick up Mars, our last puppy, which put things too late to ride. Maybe later today it won’t be too hot. There is supposed to be multiple planets visible in the east tomorrow, Sunday, very early morning. BUT you’ll have to get up early as it is supposed to be visible before dawn while it’s still dark.

As we finish up the summer - I hope - we are scheduling riding for our regular classes beginning the week of September 14. Riding will be on Tuesday afternoon and on Saturday mornings. Unfortunately, once again an Excessive Heat Warning has been set until Tuesday evening - which cancels our ride on the 12th. Maybe on the 19th ? ? ?

Hope so. BUT - if you can, see the annual Perseid’s meteor shower which peaks on Monday night/Tuesday very early morning. Best one of the year.

August 1st and Mother Nature is hitting us with a full week of High Heat Warnings. Predicted to be 109 here on Tuesday. So canceled early. This has truly been a very challenging summer with more canceled ride days due to heat than we’ve ever had before. Just hoping temps cool a bit so we can have a few rides in August. We did have a pretty sunset on Tuesday evening. Wednesday was quite hot, so, again chores early and hide inside doing paperwork. But, although Thursday was supposed to be very hot, it dawned with nice cloud cover. I took advantage of it. Liber-T hugged me as I started chores and with the cloud cover and a slight breeze I took her out for a nice quiet ride. She enjoyed the home trail and offered trotting in the arena, along with doing some exercises to engage her back and hindquarters to help her keep fit. Nice going and I even got rained on a bit while putting hay out. Clouds left and temps began to rise quit fast by the time I was finished. But it sure was good for both of us to get out and have a nice ride. That evening we had an almost full moon to enjoy. Friday started not too hot, so played with both Dakota and Spirit on line. Didn’t work too hard, but had both doing trot and canter on the circle. Worked to improve draw and hindquarter yields. Did some nice stay with me with Dakota having her walk forward, back up, change sides, yield hindquarters - all with no strings attached. Spirit did some nice trotting and cantering to consistently help her stretch out her stride. Her stay with me exercise needs more work. She just wanted to get back to breakfast once we finished up. Saturday morning I sure noticed the humidity was up. Excessive heat warnings once again through Tuesday night - so we’ll have to cancel once again for riding on the 12th.
