Benefis Health System Benefis Health System is a not-for-profit health system located in Montana. Six years later, a Methodist group opened Deaconess Hospital.

For more than 130 years, Benefis Health System has been a trusted provider of care for northcentral Montana, and we’ve made it our mission to provide excellent care for all, healing body, mind, and spirit. Our legacy began in 1892 when five Catholic Sisters opened the Columbus Hospital in Great Falls. The two hospitals merged in 1996 under the new Benefis name, derived using Latin root words “bene” (meaning good) and “fis” (faith). And we have continued to grow throughout the region, ensuring we are able to bring our programs and services to more Montanans. Benefis Health System now serves about 230,000 residents in a vast 14-county region. We are located on three campuses in Great Falls, in Montana’s Capital City of Helena, and in the rural towns of Choteau and Fort Benton. Benefis has more than 500 beds, including long-term and hospice care, and employs more than 300 physicians. We are consistently ranked among America’s top hospitals by the nation’s leading healthcare ratings organizations for a range of services, including cancer care, joint replacement, stroke treatment, wound care, and home health. We are honored to call this part of Montana home, and we never forget that the best care is personal. That’s why we treat each patient as we would a family member or friend. The Children's Bereavement Program has camps for children and teens, support groups, in-school programs, and other ways of connecting with grieving children.
“Attending Darcy’s Hope allowed me to open up a little more about my losses. I learned I’m not the only person who has lost a father,” a Darcy’s Hope teen bereavement camp participant wrote in a letter of thanks for the program.

The program’s beloved Camp Francis marked 32 years in June of providing a sanctuary for children who have lost a loved one. Ceremonies, time in nature, conversations with people who understand, and s’mores around the campfire all help with healing. Because of donor support, no family must pay to take part in the camp magic.

As we look forward to Giving Tuesday, we’re highlighting the ways donors can make an immediate and significant difference for children through Benefis Foundation. To support the program, visit Benefis.org/Give. Pick “Children’s Bereavement Services” from the Gift Designation list to start your contribution.

Donors to the Play is Power program help patients ages 5-17 in underserved and rural communities take part in summer camps and other enrichment activities they would otherwise miss out on. The goal is to help students cope with the challenges that come when school is out for the summer, increasing their intellectual, social, and physical growth during a vulnerable time.

This is a new fund launched by Dr. Heather Halko, a pediatric clinical psychologist, and Dr. LaToya Floyd, a child and adolescent psychiatrist, to expand opportunities that many families take for granted. They’ve seen the impact of going without. As we look forward to Giving Tuesday, we’re highlighting the ways donors can make an immediate and significant difference for children through Benefis Foundation. Let’s help children in need thrive when school is out!

Please join us in recognizing the Native American Welcoming Center staff as our Team of the Quarter!

This team consistently demonstrates outstanding patient care and problem-solving in challenging situations. They ensure comfort and well-being for Native patients and families, and collaborate with medical staff to ensure that the Benefis mission statement is met for all Native patients. Staff members have pursued additional training, which has contributed to the overall success of the center. Every employee of the center continually strives for improvement of processes that affect all who visit. They also provide needed education for new Benefis employees as well as students.

Through their dedication and compassionate care, they have made a significant impact on our patients and the hospital as a whole. Congrats to this amazing team!

We would like to thank the Fraternal Order of Eagles Great Falls Auxiliary #14!

On Friday evening, Benefis Foundation staff attended the Eagles' Bingo Night to accept a generous donation to Benefis Foundation for the Heart and Vascular Institute. This year’s President’s Fundraising Project, led by Edie Summers, raised an incredible $2,871.65! 💙

We’re grateful not only for this gift but also for their commitment to support the Heart and Vascular Institute again in 2026. Community generosity like this truly makes an impact. Thank you!

Our Story

Benefis Health System has been providing quality healthcare to the residents of Northcentral Montana for more than 125 years. In 1892, just three years after Montana became a state, Columbus Hospital was founded in Great Falls by five Catholic Sisters. Shortly after, the call to establish a Protestant hospital was answered when Deaconess Hospital opened in 1898.

Throughout the next century, these two founding hospitals that later became Benefis experienced tremendous growth. They went from providing the very basic necessities to expanding physical facilities multiple times in order to accommodate rapid medical advances.

In 1996, these two pioneering institutions merged. Since then, Benefis has flourished to become what it is now—a comprehensive health system that is truly world-class.

Through it all, Benefis and its predecessors have remained true to their core mission of providing excellent care to our vast region of Montana.
