About Medicine Man Massage
My journey towards Massage Therapy began after high school when I was 19 years old and began training and competing in different Martial Arts. After a few years of placing heavy physical demands on my body through both Martial Arts and physically intensive employment I had injured almost every part of my body in every conceivable way possible. Out of necessity I began to learn and implement self-care techniques like stretching, foam rolling, yoga, hot+cold baths, as well as regular massage therapy sessions. Over the course of 10+ years of training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, submission grappling, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, and Wrestling for 2 years at Iowa Lakes Junior College in the Mid-West I met many people with similar recurring injuries and pain patterns that I had either experienced first hand or had seen in other people. Sadly, I also saw many people grow desperate with their symptoms after being unable to work or play in the ways that made them happy and their lives meaningful and mismanage their pain. Many of my friends and training partners throughout the years rushed into what often proved to be expensive, unnecessary, and irreversible spinal and cervical surgeries that forever after impacted their life quality and the activities they were able to participate in. Even more compelling than this though was the amount of people I saw fall victim to the negative consequences of dangerous and addictive prescription Opiates that are so common in the Western medical tradition. Growing up in Jacksonville, FL I witnessed some of the best and brightest minds of my generation succumb to horrible life upending addiction and premature death by overdose. Through Medicine Man Massage I seek to offer people safe “hands on” non surgical pain relief without the use of prescription medications.
