🌈 June Pets of the Month: Ely & Emmy! 🐾
This unforgettable pair of pups belongs to one of our wonderful clients, and they’re truly one-of-a-kind. Meet Ely (turning 11 this June) and Emmy (age 6), two lovable, chaotic, and fiercely loyal rescue dogs who have brought endless joy—and a few emergency calls—to their human’s life.
✨ Let’s start with their names:
Ely (pronounced “E-Lee”) is named after Ely, Minnesota—a sweet reminder of home after her human moved to Kansas City. The name was often mispronounced, even at the vet, where it was phonetically entered as “E-Lee.” Emmy came along during the pandemic and was originally named Mila. To avoid another pronunciation struggle, her name was changed (inspired by a Chip & Joanna Gaines binge-watch). Now Ely and Emmy make the perfect “E”-squad.
✨ Breed breakdown:
Ely is a mix of American Staffordshire Terrier, Manchester Terrier, and a hint of herding dog. Emmy is a magical 15-breed blend featuring Australian Cattle Dog, Lab, Boston Terrier, Pit Bull, German Shepherd, and more!
✨ Personality in action:
Ely’s basically part-cat. She naps in the sun, her iPhone recognizes her as a feline, and she’s a Grade A burrower. She even “talks” on command and can match pitch—howling back until she almost says “mom.”
Emmy is sweet and awkward. She survived a hard start to life, including pregnancy, a BB gun injury (she has over 50 pellets still in her body), and a broken back foot that healed improperly. Despite it all, she is loving, gentle, and a pro-level zoomie spinner—her signature move is getting spun like a top mid-run.
✨ The naughty list:
Emmy once ate 28 packets of FortiFlora, then barfed them up whole in a single bratwurst-shaped surprise. Ely once chased ducks so far into a lake that her mom had to strip down to her sports bra and dive in. What followed was a chaotic rescue involving murky water, a paddleboard stranger, dead fish, a very determined dog, and eight police cars. Ely was saved, the ducks survived, and the only casualty was human dignity.
✨ Nicknames & love:
Ely Marie goes by Bear, Scooby, Turkey, and Yoda. Emmy Jo (Josephine when she’s in trouble) is also known as Doodlebug and Jo. Ely has recovered from two ACL tears without surgery and recently had a vulvoplasty—now lovingly referred to as the Taco Tune-Up or the Meat Flap Mender (we can’t make this stuff up).
Every night before laundry day, they get to sleep in bed with their human. Ely patiently waits at the pillow, staring until the covers are lifted so she can burrow at the foot of the bed. Emmy dozes off with her tiny underbite and tongue peeking out.
These girls are resilient, hilarious, and endlessly loyal. They’ve been through so much—and they continue to love, heal, and light up every room they enter. We are beyond honored to feature Ely & Emmy as our June Pets of the Month! 💖
