Bromley Mountain’s 23rd annual “Mom’s Day Off” set a new record on February 27, netting nearly $15,000 for breast care services at the Dartmouth Cancer Center Bennington.

Our President and CEO Estevan Garcia, MD, DrPH, recently accepted the generous donation from Bromley President and General Manager Josh Witkin at the Peru, Vermont resort.

“We’re grateful that Bromley has embraced this annual event,” Garcia said. “It not only supports crucial services for patients, but brings a larger community together for a day of celebration and connection on the mountain.”

Bromley Mountain donated nearly $12,000, raised through the sale of discounted lift tickets, which was a new record for the event. Bromley’s Wild Boar Tavern, operated by Sodexo, generously donated over $2,902, about 50% of its food proceeds from the day. Overall, the event netted $14,902.

Thank you to all who participated and made the day so special!

The Learning Tree childcare center at SVMC had some exciting visitors this week, in celebration of the National Week of the Young Child.

On Thursday, a crew from Walsh Brothers — the firm overseeing our cancer center modernization — put on a special demonstration with some of the big equipment that's currently on our Bennington campus. The team also gave some fun gift bags to our students and two hard-covered books: The Mighty, Mighty Construction Site and Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site.

Earlier in the week, Vermont State Trooper Ben Prandini stopped by for a special visit with our students, who had lots of questions about his job.

We're grateful to Walsh Brothers crew and Trooper Prandini for giving our students some fantastic hands-on learning experiences.

The Week of the Young Child, through the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), encourages communities to come together to celebrate early learning.

SVMC is proud to have the only nurse residency in Vermont that is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP).

SVMC recently received “Accreditation with Distinction” from PTAP, the highest recognition awarded. This is a reaccreditation for SVMC’s Transition to Practice program, which received its first accreditation in 2021.

“The first year of nursing practice is a crucial transition point for new nurses,” said Pamela Duchene, PhD, APRN, SVMC’s chief nursing officer and vice president of patient and quality services. “Nationally, almost a quarter of new graduate nurses leave their jobs within the first year. SVMC’s Transition to Practice program works to address that statistic, locally, by providing the education, mentorship and support that nurses need to succeed.”

SVMC’s 12-month program serves nurses in medical-surgical, emergency, intensive care, women’s and children’s services, renal dialysis, and operating room settings. It incorporates clinical skills training, professional development, and peer support to help new nurses navigate their transition into practice. The SVMC nurse education team—led by Alison Camarda, PhD, RN, NPD-BC, director of Organizational Development and the Magnet Program—spearheaded the successful PTAP accreditation process.

SVMC honored two nurses recently, recognizing their reassuring presence and kindness with patients.

Mollie McMahon, RN, was celebrated for her problem-solving skills and helping a patient with anxiety navigate an Endoscopy procedure that required a sudden change of location.

“Mollie calmly and with good humor and a nice supply of warm blankets transported me herself, sent someone to find my husband to let him know of the change in venue, found a lovely open room for me and took care of delivering me to Dr Geriani,” the nominator wrote. “Afterwards, she also wheeled me out to our friend who was waiting to drive us home. I asked her when her day started (5:30 am) and I was amazed by the kind calm energy she still displayed at 3 pm. Thank you Mollie for your sensitivity, problem solving expertise.”

Darcy Main, RN, CRNI was recognized for her support of a patient receiving procedures through SVMC’s Interventional Pain Clinic.

“When the procedure creates pain, I have felt her calming and reassuring hand on my back, calming me and allowing the procedure to progress more easily,” the patient wrote. “She is who calls me to check in, both on the day after surgery and a few weeks later to see if it had its intended effect. She is a calm and positive person with high skills and I am grateful that it is she who attends me during and after these sessions.”

Thank you, Mollie and Darcy!

SVMC’s Women’s and Children’s (WCS) officially launched Team Birth, a patient-centered care model, this week.

Team Birth supports open communication among patients, their support people and clinicians. The Team Birth implementation has also rolled out at Dartmouth Health's Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) and Cheshire Medical Center.

“Today, we are not just launching a new program, we’re advancing a shared commitment, a commitment to safer care, to clearer communication and to truly patient-centered experiences through the implementation of Team Birth,” said SVMC’s Mindy Dame, MS, RN, Director of Women’s and Children’s Services and OBGYN.

SVMC held a “BIRTHday” party for Team Birth earlier this week, pictured.

Developed by Ariadne Labs, the TeamBirth model empowers patients to take an active role in their care throughout their stay for labor, delivery and recovery. A Joint Commission study found that failures in communication between providers and patients account for up to 90% of preventable injuries during childbirth.

SVMC Medical Staff’s Annual Recognition Event was held last week, celebrating the recipients of the 2026 Clinical Excellence Award and 2026 Teamwork Award.

James MacGregor, MD, of SVMC General Surgery, was presented with the Clinical Excellence Award this year. His nomination noted: “In several instances Dr. MacGregor has demonstrated willingness to go above and beyond for his patients. His willingness to participate and lead in some of the most difficult cases has garnered true respect from his colleagues across multiple specialties. His sincere and thoughtful contributions to patient care have truly made a difference, improving not only the lives of this patient's but the culture here at SVMC.

James Kalmuk, MD, of the Dartmouth Cancer Center Bennington, received this year’s Teamwork Award. His nomination read: “James consistently goes above and beyond in assuring that everyone on the team has the resources they need to evaluate and treat our patients. He routinely seeks out external records himself and communicates with outside providers to assure everyone is on the same page, including for patients who are not directly under his care. He has spearheaded the re-vamp of our care team huddle to assure that everyone is consistently on the same page.”

Congratulations to Drs. MacGregor and Kalmuk, and to the providers celebrating years of service, below.
