Bennington County’s emergency cold weather shelter program activation has been activated for this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights (January 29 - 31) to ensure that individuals and families experiencing homelessness have access to safe, warm overnight accommodations during dangerous temperatures.

An Emergency Cold Weather Shelter will be activated in Bennington County at the Episcopal Church located at 200 Pleasant Street, Bennington, Vermont. The shelter can accommodate up to 35 guests (Including families and unaccompanied homeless youth) and is available on a first come, first served basis.

People may come to the Shelter starting at 6:30 pm. Guests MUST arrive prior to 9:30 pm. Arrivals after 9:30 pm are not allowed except when accompanied by emergency personnel such as police or rescue squad. The shelter closes at 7 am for the day.

Upon entry, a brief intake will be conducted by shelter staff, including check-in and safety procedures. During this time, staff are also able to offer soft referrals to partnering agencies and programs, helping guests connect with available community resources and support services.

The Emergency Cold Weather Shelter provides:
● Safe, staffed overnight accommodations
● Warmth, cots, and access to restroom facilities
● Inclusive access for individuals, families, and unaccompanied youth
● Supportive service referrals through local partners

Staying on top of important medical screenings just got easier, thanks to an expansion of SVMC’s scheduling system.
Existing patients are now receiving appointment options for screenings, including mammograms and lung cancer scans, via text messaging.

Here’s how it works:
▶️ A patient will receive an initial welcome text from “SVMC Appointment Reminder.”
▶️ A screening reservation option will then arrive, including the screening date, time and location. If the time works, a patient can simply reply “1” to confirm or “9” to reschedule or decline.
▶️ Once a date is confirmed, patients receive a helpful appointment reminder one month and one week prior to the appointment.
▶️ Patients are also texted a link to test preparation instructions for their particular screening.

To learn more, including how to confirm the text is from SVMC, click the link: https://svmc.org/news-events/article/click-confirm-get-screened-svmc-automates-appointment-system

Heritage Family Cares 4 You (HFCares4U) — a charitable foundation through Heritage Family Credit Union— recently awarded SVMC’s Baby Café a $5,000 grant!

SVMC launched Baby Café through its Women’s and Children’s Services (WCS) in 2024. The program is a free, drop-in, informal breastfeeding and social support group for parents, providing lunch and access to lactation experts. Baby Café meets weekly at Bennington Community Market, every Wednesday, from 11 am to 12:30 pm.

“This program brings together 15-25 parents each week to enjoy a meal and talk with professionals who can provide advice and guidance,” said Mindy Dame, MS, RN, director of SVMC’s WCS and OBGYN. “The program is entirely free of charge. That’s why this gift from Heritage is so important. It allows us to continue this vital community program.”

We’re so grateful to Heritage Family Credit Union for seeing how much this program benefits the health of our parents and children!

SVMC's Baby Cafe is the only program of its kind in Vermont and nearby Massachusetts.
