Practice. We get good at what we practice, and we're always practicing something.
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about practice. With my clients, we talk about what they're going to practice between sessions. They're interested in positive change, and it requires intentional efforts to shift from our default mode and create new habits, new ways of thinking and feeling, new neural pathways.
Sometimes they think of practice as homework. But that's not it. Practice for change requires repetition.
This applies to everything we do. Take a moment, what are you practicing now? Consciously or unconsciously?
This really hit home as I'm practicing "walking" again after leg surgery. Each time, I see changes and know that if I put in the time, effort, and patience, I'll be back on two strong feet, walking, hiking, and not really thinking about the process. It'll become automatic, one of my defaults. But now, it can be frustrating and humbling. I remind myself of this concept, know I'm getting stronger, and visualize the not so distant day on two strong legs again.
