July is UV Awareness Month! A great reminder that protecting our skin is crucial, and one of our own knows this firsthand.
ShanRae Hawkins is a dedicated Wallowa County Health Care District Foundation board member and a passionate advocate for skin health. Her commitment to our community is profound, especially after her personal battle with melanoma.
ShanRae's powerful story is a vital reminder:
"My childhood consisted of playing outside in Wallowa County creeks and fields—the perfect playground for exploring nature and developing an appreciation for sunny, warm days. I was a healthy, active 35-year-old mom and wife when my life changed forever with a diagnosis of melanoma. A routine visit to my dermatologist for an annual skin screening revealed the unexpected."
She reflects on factors like summers spent outdoors, sports, and even tanning beds. "Before my diagnosis, I hadn't fully understood what melanoma was or that young, healthy individuals could be affected by skin cancer. The skin cancer screening saved my life, and we caught my melanoma in the early stages."
Today, ShanRae is a champion for "sun smart" living:
"We live in a beautiful place, and we all enjoy the outdoors. Be sun smart - cover up and wear sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. Ultraviolet radiation, whether from the sun or a tanning bed, is a carcinogen, just like ci******es. Skin damage is cumulative and catches up with us in the form of skin cancer or age spots!"
