In this New York Times article, a new study published in JAMA, the Journal of the American Medical Association, found that su***de deaths among people ages 15 to 34 fell 11% below projections after the 2022 launch of the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, with the largest declines in states where more 988 calls were answered.
At 211 Big Bend, we answer 988 calls for Franklin, Gadsden, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, and Wakulla counties, and as crisis calls in our region continue to rise, this research is a powerful reminder that immediate access to 988 can save lives.
Key findings:
🟦 In the 10 states with the biggest increases in 988 calls, su***des were 18.2% lower than expected.
🟦 In the 10 states with the lowest 988 uptake, su***des were 10.6% lower than expected.
🟦 The findings suggest that investing in 988 is associated with a measurable reduction in deaths.
For our community, 988 is more than a number. It is a direct connection to help, hope, and support in some of life’s hardest moments, and 211 Big Bend is honored to serve our community by answering that call for help across the Big Bend.
