Seal Team Survival Swim & PT, Inc. Kristine McCarren is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, founder of Seal Team Survival Swimming & PT, Inc

Kristine McCarren is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, founder of Seal Team Survival Swimming, Inc, and author of "Violet Finds Her Float". Kristine grew up on Long Island, and is proud to have been teaching survival swim skills to infants and children since 2013. Before her journey as a survival swim instructor began, Kristine attended Ithaca College and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science with a concentration in Pre-Allied Health. She then earned her Doctoral Degree in Physical Therapy at Stony Brook University in 2009. Kristine has practiced in various settings of PT - neurological rehab, orthopedics, and pediatrics in the clinical, school based, and home-care settings. She has also worked as an adjunct teaching assistant at Stony Brook University's Doctoral of Physical Therapy Program

As a mom of two little ones, Kristine understands how important researching and selecting an effective swim program is for your child's health and safety. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Kristine has a unique understanding of motor learning and skill acquisition, which she has paired with her experience as a survival swim instructor to develop a unique teaching style that is individualized for each student. Kristine teaches infants and children how to save themselves if they make it to the water unsupervised. Children as young as 6 months can use this skill should they fall in the water alone. Babies 6 to 12 months of age learn and integrate breath control with the motor skill of rolling to and maintaining a back float to wait for help. Children who are walking are taught to expand on the floating skill and integrate it with a short underwater swim, in order to manage their energy and reach a way out of the water. Each child will learn how to master aquatic survival skills, first in a bathing suit, then fully clothed, because most water accidents happen when children are not dressed for the water. All lessons at Seal Team Survival Swimming are one-on-one, with a strict focus on safety and attention to each student's unique learning preferences. Kristine has an extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology, which combined with her clinical and in-water background has allowed her to apply the principles of motor learning with behavioral psychology to teach children these lifesaving skills.

And rolling now for winter and spring 2026. Don’t wait.

Stop. Rubbing. Your. Child’s. Back. Before. Swim. Lessons.

I know — it feels instinctive.
I know — it feels kind.
And I know — coming from a pediatric PT and a mom, this sounds like I need a hug…
…but don’t you dare rub my back either because I’ll probably start crying too.

Your child’s nervous system is looking to YOU to decide how to feel.

When you use the same soothing strategies you use for sickness, pain, shots, falls, fear, or true distress…
…you’re telling their brain:
“This is something to worry about,” before the lesson even starts.

There’s a big difference between giving your child information that says:
✔ “You’re safe.”
✔ “I expect you to handle this.”
✔ “This is part of learning.”

vs.
🚫 “Oh no honey, I know this is scary, let me comfort you like you’re hurt.”

One keeps them regulated.
The other ramps up the crying before we even get in the pool.

I’m not asking you to be cold.
I’m asking you to be CLEAR
Your calm, neutral presence helps your child’s nervous system settle enough to learn — not panic.

So next time you’re tempted to rub their back or lean into the “aw poor baby” energy…
Take a breath.
Give them a quick high five, and hand them over to this monster right here.

Our Story

ISR Seal Team Survival Swimming is a survival swim program taught by Dr. Kristine McCarren, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified ISR Instructor. Dr. McCarren teaches infants and children how to save themselves in the event they make it to the water unsupervised. Even children as young as 6 months can use this technique should they fall in the water. Babies 6 to 12 months of age learn to hold their breath underwater, turn onto their backs, and float unassisted. Children older than one year old who are walking are taught to expand this into a swim-float swim sequence- learning how to hold their breath, swim with their heads down, roll onto their backs to float, rest, breathe, and roll back over to continue swimming until they reach the side of the pool. Children learn how to master ISR Self-Rescue® skills, first in a bathing suit, then fully clothed, because most water accidents happen when children aren’t dressed for the water. ISR lessons focus on safe, one-on-one training by ISR certified instructors who customize the program to the abilities of each student. ISR is the leading behavioral-based approach to swimming lessons, using techniques that are developmentally appropriate for your child. Watching your children is not enough to protect them from every hazardous water situation. Teaching children survival swimming skills provides an extra layer of protection. Learning to roll onto their backs and float unassisted is crucial for survival. There are over 800 documented cases of students saving themselves using their ISR Self-Rescue skills. ISR has a worldwide network of certified instructors and has delivered more than 7 million safe and effective lessons. Kristine McCarren, the founder of ISR Seal School Team Survival Swimming is a Doctor of Physical Therapy with extensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology. She has worked with children in various settings. With this background, along with her 8-week in water and academic training with ISR, Dr. McCarren will assure that your child learns their survival skills in the safest environment possible. This is not your average high school swimmer or lifeguard teaching lessons. This is an aquatic survival specialist teaching your child to be safe in the water!
