Sugar addiction, as it's commonly talked about, is a myth (pst...for more about that, check out the recording of my food freedom intro webinar - link in bio).

This might feel super discouraging or downright offensive if you really feel addicted to sugar. I know, I've been there. Before I became an intuitive eater, I truly believed like I was addicted to sugar. I would always binge on sweets and felt out of control around them. I always talked about my raging sweet tooth and how if I had one cookie, I'd have no choice but to eat the entire box.

The good news is that there's nothing wrong with you. You're not addicted to sugar. Feelings of food/sugar addiction are a result of food/sugar restriction. It's probably one of these things (or a combination) that's making you feel this way.

If you want to learn how to break your feelings of sugar addiction and start your journey to food freedom, I talk about all of this in my food freedom intro webinar. Click the link in my bio to get the recording for just $10!

Of course having a healthy relationship with food isn't a guarantee that your child will...and vice versa. Of course there are many other factors that lead to a person developing an eating disorder than just their parents' relationship with food.

But we can't ignore the research that shows that children of mothers with eating disorders are more likely to develop eating disorders themselves. A disordered relationship with food often starts at home.

(And just because the particular study focused on mothers doesn't mean that a father's relationship with food isn't important too).

The good news is that a healthy relationship with food can start at home too. And one of the best ways to start a healthy relationship with food is to model one yourself.

Even if you would never comment on your child's body or food intake or put them on a diet, they see your behaviors. They hear what you say about your own body.

Work on having the relationship with food and your body that you would want your children to have. 💜

Which one would you choose?! Let me know in the comments!

If you truly enjoy Halo Top or other "healthy" ice creams, then I would never want to make you feel bad for eating them!

But unfortunately many people don't eat those ice creams because they like them, they eat them because real ice cream is demonized and they're made to feel like Halo Top is their only safe choice. Or they fear that they'll eat the whole pint either way so it's safer to choose the option that only has 300 calories per pint.

The good news is that it's possible to enjoy real ice cream without eating the entire pint in one sitting! When you stop demonizing it and give yourself true permission to enjoy it, over time you'll find that you feel less out of control around it and that you're able to stop eating when you feel satisfied.

And when you're eating real, full fat, rich ice cream, you're going to need a lot less to feel satisfied than you will if you're eating a "healthy" alternative. Choosing the "healthy" alternative could also leave you feeling unsatisfied and still craving the real thing.

And there's also the mentality of "I *can* eat the whole pint of Halo Top so that's what I'm going to do" without paying attention to your body's cues. When you ditch the food rules, it's easier to listen to your body and eat an amount that you actually want.

There's a common misconception that health at every size means that every single person is healthy no matter their size or lifestyle behaviors.

The truth is, no, not everyone is living a healthy lifestyle. The idea of health at every size is just that your size isn't an indicator of health. You can't tell what someone's health or lifestyle is like just by looking at them.

And that you can make changes (like increasing physical activity, sleeping better, finding ways to relieve your stress, eating a more nutrient dense diet, drinking more water, etc) and improve your health even if those changes don't result in any weight loss.

Health at every size rejects that ideas that you need to be thin to be healthy or that the pursuit of intentional weight loss is the key to health.

Behaviors and lifestyle tell you much more about someone's health than their size ever will.

Intentional weight loss cannot coexist with intuitive eating.

Intuitive eating is all about learning to tune into your body's cues to tell you what, when, and how much to eat. When you pursue weight loss, you're forced to listen to external cues to guide your eating in order to force a calorie deficit.

This is why intuitive eating is a weight-neutral framework. Some people gain weight, some people lose weight, and some people maintain their weight. The point is that your weight isn't the point.

Does listening to your body seem impossible to you? Do you feel like intuitive eating just isn't possible or realistic for you because your relationship with food is just too messed up? Do you want to try intuitive eating but you worry about binging or what it will do to your weight or health? I talk about all of these fears and more in my Food Freedom Intro Webinar! **By bringing your own food to social events, I don't mean bringing something that you can eat if you have an allergy or other dietary restriction, and I also don't mean bringing something for everyone to enjoy. I mean bringing a "safe food" because you're afraid of eating whatever is being served at the event.

Some Thursday thoughts.

As a dieter, I thought that if I tried to eat intuitively, I would want to eat literally 24/7. But I learned though experience that when you're listening to your body and not restricting, the idea of eating constantly isn't appealing and your world no longer revolves around food.

I talk lots more about this in my food freedom intro webinar. Click the link in my bio to get the recording for just $10!

When determining if something is hungry, you have to look beyond whether or not it *sounds* healthy.

"Food is fuel" might SOUND healthy. Focusing on only eating nutrient dense foods might SOUND healthy. But if it leads to an unhealthy relationship with food, extra stress/anxiety, and binge eating, then that's not healthy at all.

Meanwhile, the idea of eating food just because it tastes good sometimes and putting a high value on ENJOYING your food might not sound healthy. People tell me all the time that I'm promoting unhealthy eating habits.

But if that mindset leads to a healthy relationship with food, less binge eating, less stress around food, and a more varied and nutrient-dense diet, then it IS healthy. And the good news is that research shows that intuitive eating leads to all of those things!

There's no room for all-or-nothing mentality in intuitive eating.

All-or-nothing mentality sets us up to fail. The truth is, we don't have to live in all-or-nothing mentality. We can live somewhere in the middle.
