A reader writes: “How do you get all your horses ridden every day?”

***

Well, the thing is, I don’t.

Many, if not most, horse programs are based on the premise of regular, most-every-day riding, in exchange for monthly payment… along the lines of thirty, sixty or ninety days. Since I am not that disciplined, choosing to ride only my own horses, I’ve bumbled along riding my green horses every other day, at best. The old-timers are only taken out once or twice each week.

Granted, I don’t ride tough horses.

I try and select my projects based on gentle eyes and whether or not they feel like they’ll work for me... and eventually, my clients... without too much white-knuckle stuff. Sometimes I’m oh-so-wrong and have to buckle down a lot harder! Most times, though, I’ve noticed that my horses and ponies have a ‘slow perk’ that actually festers in them on their days off. So often, I’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that something really difficult during the last ride has somehow, magically, been learned during the day off.

This feature only works to my advantage if, on that last ride, the horse or pony was calm, happy and trying its best. If so, it will come back, better than ever. If I’ve misread the signs or if real life gets in the way after a bad ride, however, I will have a darned near insurmountable problem when I go back to it. So, this, too, figures how often my horses will be saddled and worked.

My friends live in a herd, year ‘round, on the pasture. Even the easy keepers have a sparse few acres with hills and browse for them to pick along in turnout, which is hugely preferable to living in a dry-lot pen. This herd life is what keeps them fresh and young-minded.

All come in, each morning, for water and salt. This also means that they are handy to me when I want to ride them. At the end of the day, everyone is again turned out before I come in, kick off my boots and wonder if the fairies have made any supper.

From a ranch horse standpoint, daily riding out works miracles… but this type of riding is not as demoralizing as daily schooling in a pen. When I’m faced with a horse who is being ridden every single day, I’m left wondering, is this horse really broke? Or, is he kept tired? This one question should be asked by more people who are horse shopping. Most ‘going’ horses who are listed for sale will be in a daily program, in order to show their best.

Daily riding is good. I believe that all living beings need the odd day off, however. In my case, my own energy means that my horses are on a strict every-other-day schedule. Half are ridden one day, while the remainder are ridden the next... and so on. This works for me and seemingly, works for them.

As always, our methods are proven—or not—by our horses. They’re the ones practicing what we preach.

Why Natural Solutions?

My sweet horse Sunnie who has been my best friend for 10 years has had quite a few health issues. From sand colic to diarrhea to respiratory emergency vet visits some very life threatening. I was determined to do all I could to help support his wellness on my end in addition to my vets care. During one of Sunnie’s colic episodes while waiting for the vet to make it to the stable it was a weekend and they lived an hour away..a friend of mine had a friend at the stable visiting who was an equine massage therapist, she asked if she could help while we were waiting on the vet I said sure. I watched in amazement how she massaged Sunnie and he relaxed and she encouraged him to move along with her and he seemed to feel much less stressed. The vet arrived and said why did you call me he is fine we all chimed in not 45 minutes ago. I knew then I wanted to learn and understand the benefits of equine massage. I also incorporated into Sunnie’s wellness supplements for his digestive system which is supporting him very well. Sunnie also developed a respiratory issue and was treated with steroids and prednisone by the vet a couple of times so I knew I had to find ways to support that system as well. Well the vet suggested that a MSM supplement to be very important to his wellness. So MSM, wetting his hay and he is also now in an outside stall so less dust and mold and he is doing well also. I am a distributor of Young Living Essential Oils and have been using them for my own wellness since 2011 and have also incorporated the oils into Sunnie’s wellness supporting his systems as well. Young Living oils has been working with horses and other animals since there beginning 22 years ago. My confidence in the Young Living’s brand of Therapeutic Essential Oils makes me feel very safe when using them on myself and especially my horse and other animals. Sunnie loves his favorite peppermint oil which supports his digestion and lavender baths and massage. Also cleaning his buckets with Young Livings chemical free Thieves cleaning solution as well as other Young Living Essential Oil solutions makes me feel real good about doing all I can to help support Sunnie’s wellness as well as my own. I am very excited to share these solutions as well to you for your family and horses and animals.
