On Earth Day, during Stress Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize the impact environment can have on overall well-being.

Access to natural light, fresh air, and green space is associated with reduced stress response, improved sleep, enhanced concentration, and emotional regulation.

With spring in full bloom here in Pennsylvania, it’s a reminder that even brief time outdoors can be a simple way to reset and recharge. (Unless seasonal allergies have other plans.)

Over the course of five weeks, through the New Vitae Wellness Foundation, we partnered with DeSales University to host a workshop series with student veterans, active military, and their families within the DeSales community.

What started as a conversation became something more. Voices were found. Barriers were challenged. Connections were built. And for some, the impact was life-changing.

Facilitated by New Vitae’s Veteran Service Coordinator, Justin Wunderler, whose lived experience created the kind of connection that made this possible. This is what it looks like when education is grounded in real experience and stigma is challenged through understanding.

Grateful to partner with DeSales University and especially Wendy Badman, Director of the Veterans and Military Services Center, whose leadership and dedication created the kind of environment where this work could truly take shape.

Grieving Someone Who Is Still Alive

Over the past few weeks, we’ve been sharing more about brain injury and its impact in behavioral health. Today, we’re sharing a more personal perspective.

Brain injury can change more than physical health. It can affect relationships, identity, and the quiet moments families once shared.

Our psychologist, Dr. Mary Cowgill, explores the concept of ambiguous loss and the hidden grief that families may experience when someone they love is still present, but changed.

Alongside the article, we are honored to share a poem written by her son, Evan T. Cowgill, reflecting on the complicated love and grief that can exist after brain injury.

Swipe to read the poem.

Social workers are often the steady presence behind the scenes, showing up consistently and standing beside individuals through some of the most complex moments in life.

In mental health and brain injury care, that role is critical. Progress is not always linear. It requires patience, trust, and support that meets people where they are while helping them move forward.

This month, we recognize the impact social workers have every day through advocacy, consistency, and the ability to navigate complexity with both professionalism and compassion.

Uplift. Defend. Transform.

🍀 A Little Luck, A Lot of Fun 🍀

Our St. Patrick’s Day mixer brought all of our Northern programs together for a fun-filled evening of music, dancing, shamrock shakes, games, and prizes.

Evenings like this are a reminder of what makes our community so special. It’s not just the activities, it’s the energy in the room, the laughter, and the connections between staff and residents across programs.

Safe to say… a very good time was had by all

Brain injury is more common than many people realize, and its effects often shape cognition, emotion, coping, and engagement in treatment.

In behavioral health settings, challenges such as slowed processing, difficulty with multi-step tasks, or changes in emotional regulation can sometimes be misunderstood when the neurological impact of brain injury goes unrecognized.

During Brain Injury Awareness Month, members of our Action Recovery team shared insights from their work supporting individuals living with the effects of brain injury and the importance of approaching care through a brain-informed lens.

Understanding these neurological factors helps clinicians provide clearer guidance, more effective supports, and treatment approaches that better align with how the brain heals and adapts.

Brain injury can affect cognition, emotional regulation, behavior, and daily functioning, often in ways that aren’t immediately visible.

When these differences go unrecognized, individuals may struggle in treatment or daily life not because of a lack of effort, but because their brain is working differently.

Awareness starts with understanding.
