Family court professionals are urged to learn the science behind why giving abusers custody of children is never a good idea.

Itโs insane - yet true. How could a past history not be relevant? We all know that abuse is a PATTERN of exerting power and control over another.
That is doesnโt just happen IN the relationship - it happens outside of the relationship too.

These murders will only grow in number until family courts are held responsible for the poor practices of using GALs and evaluators who have no specific knowledge or expertise in domestic violence and coercion control to make decisions in these cases. so heartbreaking ๐ and so preventable.
Another horrific Colorado filicide took place earlier this month in Delta County. 3-year-old Summer and 7-year-old Jessi Hill were murdered by their father who was in the midst of a child custody dispute with the childrenโs mother. The girls were visiting their father when a welfare check was conducted on the fatherโs home and all three were found dead. The father reportedly had violent tendencies, and he killed them during one of the first visits the judge granted with his daughters.
In recent years, the rise in the number of Colorado children being murdered by a parent or parental figure has been notable. Colorado is in the list of top 10 states with the most divorce or separation-related murder victims since 2008. In the last four years alone, 10 innocent children have been killed in Colorado, which accounts for nearly half of their total victims in the 15 years weโve been tracking these tragedies. That sharp increase in filicide is deeply concerning.
We mourn with Summer & Jessiโs mother, Tierny, and all those who knew and loved these beautiful girls. Summer and Jessi are #982 and #983 in our US Child Homicide database and these two girls deserved to grow into adulthood.

I am honored to be part of this amazing panel for the Academy of Professional Family Law Mediators virtual conference this week.
This lively panel will discuss best practices for assisting parents with some of the most complex issues that may arise:
What if one parentโs parenting choices are perceived as โbadโ by the other parent?
How will scheduled time with the children be determined (especially on holidays!)?
How do parents determine who gets to attend the childrenโs extracurricular activities?
Who makes the important educational choices when the parents donโt agree?
These and many other questions will be addressed to equip mediators in helping parents resolve a myriad of polarizing issues, while keeping the best interests of the children in full focus.

At York Consulting and Family Services, LLC we focus on helping parents and families navigate the overwhelming task of choosing the best option for their at-risk son or daughter. Many families have exhausted all of their local resources. When a child is struggling it affects every family member and aspect of life. Finding the right placement is just the first step in the process. Once we have identified the appropriate options, we support you in making the decision, enrollment process and walk with you through the course of treatment. Our goal is to support and coach throughout the process and be your childโs advocate.
York Consulting and Family Services, LLC is independent and receive no commissions or referral fees from any schools or programs we work with. Our fees are covered by the families we work with, allowing us to always have our families and clients best interest as our top priority. We believe in providing open and honest communication, operating with transparency and integrity as we help guide you through the journey toward healing and wholeness.
Intervention
Through our diverse experience within the industry, we are able to support you in deciding how and if to talk to your child about treatment. If needed, we can help support and intervene. We have a track record of success in persuading your child to get help and choose to enter a program or school.
Coaching and Family Support
When appropriate, we are able to work with a client before and after treatment. Families and clients often need support before a decision to place outside of the home is needed or after treatment and a client is transitioning home. We can design and implement an individualized approach for clients and families, providing coaching and support.
