Looking for a new way to relax? This online suggestion might shock you—literally.

A new wave of wellness gadgets promises that a tiny jolt of electricity to the vagus nerve can help reduce stress and improve sleep. There’s some science behind the social media sensation—similar methods have been used to treat epilepsy in the past—but researchers are still determining whether these new devices can truly deliver: https://on.natgeo.com/47SNeeE

I’m a student researcher at Northumbria University in the UK, and I’m looking to speak with adults 25+ for an online conversation about your lived experiences with misophonia. No questionnaires — just a relaxed, friendly chat. If you are interested, email me at kat.britten@northumbria.ac.uk. I'd really love to hear your story.

You know, I think it might be wonderful to put in some sort of a study to the Misophonia Research Fund about the effect of Misophonia conventions on individuals who attend. My class I offered in Dallas on the effect of movement on Misophonia was fascinating and I would like to write up the results and publish this somewhere.

I used a variety of games and activities that were very engaging and about 15 people to 20 people came to the session and we assigned ourselves a pre-event Misophonia distress score based on 0 to 10 or 10 is the highest level of distress. After each activity, we took a few seconds to jot down a current descriptive number.

And the scores of some of them dropped to zero and others reduced by 60 to 80% which was my hypothesis, having worked with Misophonia for nearly 30 years.

I think this type of hypothesis and speculation based on 30 years of observation and history might be useful in helping people to create activities that are better suited for Miso phones and their families.

For example, one of the ideas I have promoted for years is the Thanksgiving day hike. . This is a lovely time of year to go on a hike in Oregon and we generally go down to Oakes Bittom or sometimes out to Savie Island or sometimes up to Mount Hood and we’ll take a hike that might be one to two hours, including birdwatching and activity outdoors as a family.

While that’s going on We have prepared a menu that stayed home cooking away in our crockpots or in the ovens and prepared before so by the time we get home, we then have our meal and of course people are welcome to eat in different places because we’ve spent the whole morning together in a wonderful activity.

That’s a little tiring then and after the food is put away and no more eating happens then we like to play board games as a family with the rule being you can’t eat or drink at the table.

And I’ll tell you a silly game that is a lot of fun, like unwrapping presents that have been completely encased in saran wrap from an entire box and then you have to use oven mitts to try to open it and smaller presents are included along the way and there are 2 dice on the table that the person who will be next is rolling, and when they get a pair which are the same number, then the game stops for the unwrapping person and they have to pass along the mists while the next person who’s going to unwrap is rolling the dice like mad to try to get the pair of dice before the unwrapped gets too far.

At the Center of the saran wrap ball is a larger present which generally at our house has been a nice box of almond Roca candy . I’ve seen this done with money wrapped in between the layers of saran wrap so sometimes you get one dollar sometimes you get $20 and that’s pretty encouraging and inspiring for people to try to get the thing unwrapped.

These kinds of games with movement can make family time really fun and distract those people that do have Misophonia from the difficult noises and sounds because it’s such a chaotic environment and they’re required to be quick and use their skills.

And there are many many versions of this kind of thing that you can do as a family to really have a great time together and then of course you can Intersperse watching a movie where maybe the Miso phone goes off for a respite hour or two and then can come back and you try to just keep yourself busy and entertained.

Still riding high on the October 23, the 25 convention that was so wonderful and I wish we could just do it more often .
