✨ Cinco de Mayo is a time to celebrate the rich traditions and flavors of Mexican culture — and YES, that can include nourishing, wholesome dishes too! 🌽🥑🍅

This special post was created by Natali Mendez, a dietetic intern from Mexico, who wanted to celebrate her Mexican heritage while completing her internship rotation with us. ❤️

From fiber-rich nopales and lentils to heart-healthy avocados and omega-3 rich fish, authentic Mexican recipes offer vibrant taste and support your health.

With a few simple swaps (like avocado oil instead of lard) and plenty of fresh herbs + spices, you can enjoy your favorite flavors while taking care of your heart and kidneys too.

Here’s to celebrating culture, family, and food — today and every day. Read more about Mexican food on our blog -- link in bio or visit healthymissiondietitian.com/blog!

🍚 Having diabetes doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to rice! With the right strategies, you can manage blood sugar levels while still enjoying your favorite foods. ✅

Here are 4 ways to help prevent blood sugar spikes when eating rice & other simple carbs:
1. Balance Your Plate 🥗 - Pair carbs with protein, fiber, and healthy fats to slow digestion and prevent sharp rise in blood sugar.
💡 Example Snack: Edamame 🍏 + Rice cakes
💡 Example Meal: Salmon 🐟 + Marinated Cucumber Salad 🥒 + Brown Rice 🍚
2. Watch Your Portions 🍽 – Use the ADA Diabetes Plate Method to balance your meal and prevent too many carbs at once. 1/2 plate veggies, 1/4 plate protein, 1/4 plate carbohydrate (rice, noodles, bread, pasta, tortillas, potatoes, etc)
3. Go for a Walk 🚶 – Light movement 5-30 minutes after eating can help lower blood sugar by using glucose for energy.
🩸 4. Track Your Blood Sugar Response – Everyone reacts differently to food! Check your glucose levels after meals & adjust as needed.

Happy World Kidney Day! 💙

Today, we celebrate World Kidney Day—a reminder of how important our kidneys are and how we can protect them with good nutrition and lifestyle choices!

Your kidneys are like your body’s cleaning crew, working 24/7 to keep everything running smoothly. Here’s what they do:

🩺 What Do Our Kidneys Do?

1️⃣ Filter Waste & Toxins – They clean your blood by removing waste, extra water, and toxins, which leave your body as urine.

2️⃣ Balance Fluids – They make sure you have the right amount of water in your body—not too much, not too little.

3️⃣ Control Blood Pressure – They help manage your blood pressure by controlling how much fluid is in your blood and releasing special hormones.

4️⃣ Make Red Blood Cells – They send a signal to your bone marrow to produce red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body.

5️⃣ Keep Your Bones Strong – They help activate vitamin D, which helps your body absorb calcium and keep bones healthy.

6️⃣ Balance Minerals & Electrolytes – They regulate important minerals like sodium, potassium, and phosphorus to keep your muscles, heart, and nerves working properly.

7️⃣ Help Control pH Levels – They prevent your body from becoming too acidic or too alkaline, keeping things balanced.

🥦 How Can Dietitians Help?
Working with a registered dietitian can help protect your kidneys by:
✔️ Providing personalized nutrition plans to manage kidney health.
✔️ Helping balance protein, sodium, potassium, and phosphorus intake.
✔️ Supporting diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions linked to kidney disease.

💡 Take Action Today!
✅ Drink enough water 💧
✅ Eat more whole foods & plant-based meals 🍎🥦
✅ Reduce excess salt & processed foods 🧂❌
✅ Get regular check-ups & know your kidney numbers!

Your kidneys work hard for you—take care of them! 🫶
