In a remarkable turn of events, Rachel and Marco Vargas from Rhode Island welcomed four identical baby girls at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix on January 24, 2025. The spontaneous conception of identical quadruplets is an extraordinarily rare occurrence, estimated at about 1 in 40 million births.

Early in her pregnancy, during a routine ultrasound, Rachel received the unexpected news that she was carrying four babies. Given the high-risk nature of such pregnancies, the Vargas family sought advice online and were eventually connected to Dr. John Elliott, a specialist in multiple births at Valley Perinatal Services in Phoenix. Dr. Elliott, who has delivered 127 quadruplets, guided them through the complexities of the pregnancy.

Rachel faced significant challenges, including strict bed rest and the looming uncertainty of her babies' survival. Despite the difficulties, at 30 weeks and three days, she delivered her daughters—Sofía, Philomena, Veronica, and Isabel—each weighing approximately three pounds. The newborns are currently in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and are expected to be discharged around their original due date, April 1.

Reflecting on their journey, Rachel emphasized the importance of self-advocacy for parents facing medical challenges during pregnancy. She encourages others to seek multiple opinions to determine the best course of action for their families. The Vargas family also expressed deep gratitude to the medical team at Banner and Valley Perinatal for their unwavering support and care.

As they prepare to transition home, the Vargas family looks forward to embracing life with their expanded family, cherishing the unexpected blessings that have come their way.

Kick Counts: A Simple Way to Monitor Your Baby's Health

Did you know that tracking your baby’s movements can help you feel more connected during pregnancy while also keeping an eye on their well-being? Kick counts, or kick checks, are an easy and effective way to monitor your baby’s activity.

Here’s how to do it:

Pick a time when your baby is usually active (often after meals or in the evening).

Sit or lie down in a comfortable, quiet spot.

Count how long it takes to feel 10 movements – kicks, flutters, or rolls.

Ideally, you should feel 10 movements within 2 hours, though most babies will accomplish this sooner.

Why are kick checks important?
A sudden decrease in activity could signal that your baby might need a little extra attention. If you notice a change in your baby’s usual pattern, contact your healthcare provider right away.

Kick counts are a great way to bond with your baby and ensure peace of mind. Let’s take this step together for a healthier pregnancy journey!
