Beginning in high school, Lauren Gager, now 35, experienced awful periods, intense bloating and debilitating migraines. She had to constantly plan around her symptoms—and still, no doctor could give her answers.
After marrying her husband Jeff and returning from their honeymoon, her symptoms worsened. She was gaining weight, exhausted, and still no diagnosis. Then everything changed when Lauren stumbled across a video on TikTok.
A stranger was talking about endometriosis, a condition where tissues like those in the uterine lining grow in other places. Something clicked for Lauren—she finally felt like someone was describing her story. New to Boston, she was referred to Peter Movilla, MD, an OBGYN at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
He listened, believed her, and finally offered her the answers she had been waiting years to hear. Lauren was diagnosed with stage 4 endometriosis, the most severe case.
In early 2024, she underwent a laparoscopy, which removed the endometriosis, reduced the pain she was in, and helped improve her chances of getting pregnant naturally.
Her advice? Advocate for yourself. “Track your symptoms, listen to your body and if you think there’s a problem, keep going to doctors,” she says. And when you find the right care, like she did at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, it can make all the difference. Lauren was especially grateful for the kindness and support from the staff.
Soon after her procedure, Lauren found out she was pregnant. Lauren and Jeff had been trying to have a baby for years, assuming it might never happen. Their daughter Sloane was born in April 2025.
Lauren adds, “I think if I had just accepted that’s the way my body is made, I would’ve never gotten the help I needed and wouldn’t have my little girl today. She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to us.”
