Meryl Suissa, MSM, PA-C
This PA Mom is taking her experience working with fire survivors in Colorado and turning it into a mission to help others in California. Meryl Suissa, a Physician Associate, mother, and founder of the Marshall Fire Community Facebook group, has become a beacon of hope and resilience for wildfire survivors. When the Marshall Fire erupted in Colorado on December 30, 2021, destroying 1,084 homes and 7 commercial structures, Meryl sprang into action. From her home in Genesee, she started the group to provide immediate support, expecting it to be a temporary platform for exchanging goods. Instead, it blossomed into a lifeline for thousands, offering resources, emotional support, and community.
Meryl’s efforts have been featured in 9News, Denver7, and CBS Colorado. Over three years, the group became a blueprint for disaster response, with Meryl maintaining resource lists, verifying victims’ needs, and connecting them with donations. From heirlooms and Afghan blankets to work boots and green-themed kitchenware, Meryl ensured survivors received what they needed to rebuild their lives. She and her team also replaced holiday decor, motivated businesses to donate thousands of items, and hosted events distributing essential goods. One family even received a donated home for a year due to Meryl’s efforts.
Now, Meryl is extending her reach to wildfire survivors in Los Angeles by sharing resources remotely. Her new group, Los Angeles Fire Community, provides advice, resource lists, and emotional support. “This is the power of the online community,” Meryl said. “Even though we’re far from LA, we can still make a difference.” The group connects donors directly to families in need and models the mission of the Marshall Fire Community.
Meryl’s work exemplifies the strength of community and compassionate leadership. Her dedication to helping others rebuild is a testament to the resilience and generosity of the PA Moms community.
We are proud to celebrate Meryl Suissa for her incredible contributions to wildfire recovery and for showing how one person can ignite hope in the face of devastation. 💙
