On August 7th, Health Builders convened a Dissemination Meeting in Nyabihu District to share findings from the 2023/2024 Health Center Performance Assessment. Together, we reviewed progress across 17 health centers, highlighted achievements, addressed challenges, and charted action plans to strengthen primary health care services. Next steps include mentorship, stronger financial management, and peer learning.

Congratulations to the dedicated teams whose commitment and hard work are raising the bar for primary health care in Nyabihu District. Your achievements inspire progress across all health facilities!

Mukamugema Desange was one of eight women who arrived at Bigogwe Health Center to deliver their babies. Despite the late hour and number of patients, the two nurses on duty attended to each woman with efficiency and care.

Her experience is a testament to the dedication of the Bigogwe staff and the growing confidence the community places in the facility, a place where mothers know they will be cared for with compassion, even in the busiest hours of the night.

Ten years ago, giving birth in Bigogwe, a rural area in Rwanda’s western province, Nyabihu District was filled with uncertainty. The local health center was not well equipped to meet the needs of the growing population. Yet, around 140 women gave birth there each month, supported by only two midwives in overcrowded and limited conditions.

“The confidence and satisfaction expressed by women who deliver here is a testament to how far we’ve come. They feel seen, supported, and safe here. They trust us, and that means everything.”
— Bigogwe Health Center Midwife

“Whether it’s a mother coming for prenatal care or a child returning for vaccines, we have their full record on hand. It helps us avoid errors and give the right care at the right time.” — Health Center Manager

One of the ways Electronic Medical Records (EMR) is enhancing healthcare in rural Rwanda is by improving the accuracy of patient data and minimizing the risk of losing important medical information. Health care providers can now quickly access patient histories, leading to better decision-making and more personalized treatment.

The main focus at Health Builders is individual coaching and mentoring of health center workers.

Our skilled health management advisors sit down one-on-one with health workers to address their unique challenges, as well as training groups of individuals on procedures, standards or generally accepted best practices. This process enables Health Builders to be true partners, learning about problems and helping to find solutions that might not be identified through surveys or observations.

Have you seen the new Impact Dashboard on our website? We’re constantly measuring how we’re doing, but now we’re providing an inside look into just how our work is paying off.

Today’s highlight is Maternity and Childcare. Since starting our ultrasound program in 2020, we have conducted 100,765 scans of expectant mothers and referred 4,057 high-risk pregnancies to hospitals for life-saving treatment. With appropriate, simple and affordable equipment and technology, health care workers can better track data and make accurate diagnoses, ultimately saving lives.

“We used to have long queues because finding files took time. Now, with EMR, we can access patient details right away and focus on giving care.” — Health Facility Nurse

With digital records, there is no need to search for paper files or rewrite patient information. Everything is stored securely and easily accessible! Health workers at the facility agree that EMR helps speed up consultations and reduce waiting times.

This is just one of three ways that EMR is transforming health care in rural Rwanda. Read more: https://www.healthbuilders.org/stories/3-ways-emr-is-enhancing-health-care-in-rural-rwanda
