🚗❄️ Driving Wheelchair-Accessible Vehicles in Cold Weather: What to Watch For ❄️♿

Winter driving can be tough on everyone — and wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAVs) need a little extra care to keep things running smoothly and safely. Here are a few cold-weather tips to keep in mind:

1️⃣ Check the ramp or lift mechanism – Ice, snow, or road salt can cause jams or slipping hazards. Keep it clear and dry before loading or unloading.
2️⃣ Watch for condensation – Moisture inside the vehicle can lead to foggy windows and slippery floors. Wipe surfaces down regularly for clear visibility and safety.
3️⃣ Mind battery performance – Cold temps can reduce the efficiency of both the vehicle’s and power wheelchair’s batteries. Keep everything charged and warm when possible.
4️⃣ Tires & traction – Ensure proper tire pressure and tread depth for winter roads. Some WAVs carry more weight on one side, so balanced traction matters!

We had another opportunity this year to proudly support the Ozark Adaptive Sports Association (OZASA) at their recent annual Off-Road Adventure event in Bentonville, AR! CEO of OZASA, Sean Kent, suffered a spinal cord injury back in 2011, and has used his new found love for adapted sports ever since then to educate on how movement, teamwork, and community can rebuild more than just the body - and this event showcased exactly that! 20 adaptive riders, 15–20 support riders, and over 10 amazing volunteers braced the mud and the rain to help people get active again, compete, and build an inclusive community through adaptive recreation.

Recently, our Fishers and Louisville stores had the honor of supporting the Indiana & Kentucky Chapters of Canine Companions! We got to enjoy the holiday festivities and even have some of their incredible service dogs-in-training practice working in and around our wheelchair-accessible vans.
These future service dogs learned how to:
⭐Safely load and unload from a ramp or lift
⭐ Navigate inside mobility-equipped vehicles
⭐ Stay calm and confident around moving equipment
⭐ Prepare for real-life scenarios with future partners who may use wheelchairs or drive accessible vans
