Melissa has been a friend for years so when she came to me with some questions about her prep I was happy to help

After some adjustments here and there, her body really started to change and improve

At about 2 weeks out I finally said let’s go all in and do this thing together 100%

So I took over everything as her coach and she executed everything to a T without so much as a single complaint. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen anyone so happy during a prep to be honest lol

After a 7+ year hiatus from competing she made her pro debut in bikini (she’s previously competed in figure)

She brought a great package to stage and was the best conditioned athlete in her class earning her a 2nd place finish in her return to competing

Things have gone so well post show that we decided we’re going to run it back and get on stage again in a couple weeks

Pressure is a privilege

My new tattoo is a constant reminder of the pressure I face

It represents the internal pressure I place on myself to become better

Physically, mentally, and emotionally

I place an enormous amount of pressure on myself to continue to improve and push my limits

I set high standards to live my life by

It’s also a reminder of the external pressure I feel from those around me

It’s not that I’m looking for validation or approval from anyone

But there is pressure on me to lead by example

As a doctor, coach, and athlete

I need to be my best for others who count on me

I believe in leading from the front to help and inspire others

This tattoo is reminds me to keep pushing myself, to not let myself down, and to not let others down who believe in me

POST SHOW REBOUND

You’re in the best shape of your life after months of strict dieting

But the show is over

Now what?

The post show rebound phase can be one of the most difficult times to navigate as a competitor

During prep, there are no options, no compromise, no cheating. You follow the plan

But now that the show is over and there’s no immediate goal in your future…

What do you do?

You’re mentally, physically, and emotionally drained

Your body is starving for food

Your brain gives you every single excuse to eat anything and everything in sight after being deprived for so long

This is where athletes can go off the rails and get real sloppy real quick

This is why it’s important to have a plan with your coach

Does that mean immediately going back to eating fish and broccoli? No

In fact you probably need to enjoy some of the food you’ve been wanting for your mental health, within reason of course

Having a general plan with some structured cheat meals and flexibility can help give an athlete direction and accountability. Allowing small treats and cheats post show also allows them to enjoy some of the bad stuff without being too strict and ending up causing them to snap and binge

The plan should also be specific to the athlete. A new competitor may be more susceptible to a poor post show rebound whereas a seasoned athlete may have things under control

Communication with your coach is extremely important

Your coach should be there to guide you through this tough time and the athlete needs to be able to communicate how they’re feeling so that the coach can make the appropriate decisions regarding their rebound plan

The post show rebound time can be a great time to reverse properly or it can be a slippery slope to looking like a whale

Talk with your coach
Have a plan in place
Enjoy some good food
Don’t eat like an as***le when you do

Use the post show rebound to your advantage instead of an excuse to eat like a lard

HOLD UP

IT’S PEAK WEEK

This weekend I’m competing at the USA Bodybuilding Championships

My coach and I set a plan this year to compete in 3 different competitions with the main goal being USAs

First, we hit the Omaha Duel of Champions to become nationally qualified where I won my class and took the overall bodybuilding title

The next step was competing at the national level at where I took 2nd place

Even though 2nd place is a loss in my eyes, I came in much tighter and better than Omaha and proved my physique can stand out at the National level

Finally, we are almost to the end goal which has been the main focus all along

Peak and bring my absolute best for USAs for a chance to earn my pro card

Tony is the mastermind behind the plan and is the reason I am where I am today

His coaching has improved me drastically from each competition to the next this season and I’m feeling confident about where we are now heading into USAs

It’s almost time to do the damn thing and I am ready

Athletes get adjusted

Athletes, especially bodybuilding competitors, don’t forget the importance of getting regular soft tissue work done

Regular soft tissue work can reduce pain and tightness, increase mobility, improve training sessions and blood flow, and help fix imbalances in your physique

Candace came to me with a very noticeable difference in her shoulders and traps during posing

Her right trap was significantly higher while posing creating an imbalance in her physique which she was forced to try to correct with her posing

Soft tissue work including massage gun, Graston, ART, and cupping has been used along with her adjustments to significantly reduce the shoulder imbalance

This has helped improve her symmetry as well as making it one less thing she has to worry about on stage

just won her bikini class and the overall at the NPC Midwest and will be back up on stage dominating in a few weeks at Jr. Nationals

Disc Bulges and herniations

One question I get asked frequently is if I can treat low back disc bulges or herniations

And the answer is yes! Absolutely

Now what is a disc bulge or disc herniation?

When we talk about a disc bulge we are referring to the intervertebral discs of the spine. The discs act as shock absorbers between your vertebrae

Over time, wear and tear or traumatic events may cause a disc to bulge or herniate

A disc bulge is when the disc sags or bulges out too far backwards towards the spinal cord and nerve roots.

A disc herniation occurs when the outer layer of the disc has ripped or torn allowing further protrusion and a leak of disc fluid into the spinal canal

Both conditions can cause physical compression or inflammatory irritation of the spinal cord and/or spinal nerves

When there is irritation of the spinal nerves you may experience symptoms like low back pain, pain radiating down into the glutes, legs, and feet. You may also feel numbness, tingling, lack of muscle function or fatigue, and in severe cases, muscle atrophy.

At times the pain and symptoms may be severe but these conditions are treatable with conservative care

I’ve had great success treating patients with disc bulges and herniations with a combination of chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapies, physical therapy exercises, and electrical stimulation

These treatments aim to help reduce their pain and symptoms, keep them off prescription drugs, and get back to their normal life
