Trisomy 18 Awareness Day is observed annually on March 18 (3/18), a date chosen to represent the three copies of the 18th chromosome that define the condition.
Today we introduce you to Gunnar, who is thriving despite his complex medical needs. He has overcome tremendous challenges, including surgery to receive bilateral cochlear implants, making him the only known child with T18 to have implants in both ears. With ongoing therapies and a strong support system, Gunnar continues to make meaningful connections and progress in his own way.
He uses a Tobii device to communicate, loves playing baseball, and is always on the move—earning him the nickname “Gunnar the Runner.” His journey reflects both the medical complexity of Trisomy 18 and the remarkable potential these children have to grow, connect, and thrive.
