When I joined the Sjogrenâs community 7 years ago, Sjogrenâs disease was downplayed as a mild dryness syndrome, instead of the serious systemic disease it is.
To speak of the reality of Sjogrenâs outside of patient-only groups was to open yourself to ridicule, hurt, and neglect. When I described the reality of Sjogrenâs to people who didnât have Sjogrenâs, I was told to âgut it outâ and âgrow a thicker skinâ, because I was âtoo sensitiveâ, âtoo dramaticâ, âprone to anxiety and depressionâ, and accused of creating my own pain. I lacked the vocabulary to describe my lived experience and I had no data to back it up.
To make matters much, much worse, major medical institutions publishing on Sjogrenâs disease grossly mischaracterized it and continue to do so to this day.
Our community was neglected and felt neglected. Seven years ago, anger and despair at the systemic individual injustices we faced were prominent emotions in all of the Sjogrenâs patient groups I joined, both online and in person.
WHEN I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH SJOGRENâS, IT WAS HARD TO IMAGINE A FUTURE FILLED WITH JOY, LOVE, AND PEACE.
I was full of despair and, in the face of neglect, dismissal, and disbelief, it was hard to have hope. But hope is what has kept me going and hope is what has gotten me and the Sjogrenâs community to where we are today.
Seven years on, we are a more connected and supportive community and weâve created accessible resources for each other. We had to, as individuals, be courageous enough to speak out against the system, risking dismissal, neglect, isolation, and abuse.
And because enough of us did, collectively, change has arrived.

Dry, sensitive skin doesn't have to hold you back this summer...
No more hives, itching, rashes, or bug bites that swell up so big you end up in the ER.
Women struggling with perfectionism...have you examined the messages your skincare brands are sending to you? How many products are you using that mask, hide, erase, blur and otherwise obliterate you? What's the marketing behind these products?
Why does your appearance need to be "corrected" or "enhanced"? Aren't you beautiful as you are?
These and more questions answered in my latest on Bexi's Blog (l!nk in bio).

Self-care is âthe practice of taking action to preserve or improve one's own healthâ.
Skin care is often marketed as self-care, especially when it is âdermatologist approvedâ. (Approved? How? Which dermatologist? Were they paid?)
We know that ingredients matter; messaging and marketing matter, too.
To find out if your skincare is self-care, read this month's article on Bexi's Blog (link in bio and stories).

Sunlight is energy in the form of various wavelengths of light: infrared, visible, and ultraviolet (UV). Plants convert the energy from sunlight into chemical energy. Then, animals, including us, consume those plants and convert them into more chemical energy and energy in other forms, allowing us to function, grow, and repair.
Chemical structure and concentration influence the bioavailability and efficacy of a nutrient to effect changes in your body. You can supplement and eat vitamin D-fortified foods, but the form found in supplements and fortified foods isn't as effective as the form of vitamin D made by your skin. Your skin canât make vitamin D if itâs covered in sunscreen or sunblock, because these products defend your skin from UV light.

My article for April, Sjogrenâs Awareness Month, titled, âThe American College of Rheumatology, Sjogrenâs Disease Experts, and Medical Educators Need To Step Upâ elicited many responses from readers that highlight the need for scientists and doctors living with Sjogrenâs to be included in helping shape Sjogrenâs research and medical education.
Scientists and doctors living with Sjogrenâs disease, are uniquely qualified to counter the myths and misconceptions entrenched in the scientific literature and perpetuated by âSjogrenâs expertsâ who lack personal experience with the disease.
And, as Sjogrenâs disease is so misunderstood and neglected by research and medicine, who better to help Sjogrenâs patients than scientists and doctors who are Sjogrenâs patients themselves?
Do you know who serves on the grant review committee for the Sjogren's Foundation?
If yes, please let me know.

When it comes to skincare, we are sold a pack of lies that serve only to profit the industry.
When we invest in skincare, we often think only of the cosmetic benefit: glowing, smooth skin that exudes confidence. But the benefits of investing in skincare that provides the building blocks your body needs to grow and repair extend far beyond esthetics. Improving your skin health improves your overall health. If youâre chronically inflamed and have dry, sensitive skin, improving your skin health can relieve your chronic inflammation and make you feel better. Itâs a different approach to skin care, skincare thatâs health care.
The skincare industry teaches you to find fault with your looks and fight your biology. It sells products formulated to keep you hooked and coming back for more.
As a consumer of cosmetics, the odds are stacked against you, which is why itâs important to know what youâre putting on your skin.

As a child I had severe eczema on my face and all over my body. My dad would wrap bandages on my legs, arms and neck to prevent me from scratching my skin raw while I slept. In the morning the bandages would be stuck to my flesh. Daily process: rip bandages off under cold running water; go to school with weepy, crusty skin that hurt when I moved; gut it out; fall over at the end of the day dreading repeating the ordeal. Dad pleaded with me not to scratch, so I wouldn't end up with severely scarred legs as an adult. I naively retorted that I would get plastic surgery to cover the scars. Buying and using makeup was like negotiating a minefield; I never knew what would cause a flare-up. The condition of my skin dictated my lifestyle; no makeup, no wool or acrylic clothing, limited social outings, no camping. The questions would always be, "Will my skin be OK with this?" and "Do I want to deal with the concerned questions and gawking stares from people?"
âDrugs provided temporary relief, e.g., corticosteroids, which create dependency, like any drug used as a Band Aid. Commercially available skincare products, such as Aquaphor, Vaseline and Eucerin, just made my skin oily, sticky and itchy, and worse, caused breakouts. Other products from Aveeno, Neutrogena, Mary Kay and Alba Botanica left my skin dry and itchy. Natural solutions suggested by doctors, such as oatmeal and saltwater baths and butter scrubs, were ineffective.
I went to graduate school to investigate how we can use diet and lifestyle to prevent disease. My Mom has always maintained that fresh food is healthy food. No matter how tired she was, we rarely ate processed foods or ate out. She cooked everything from scratch. This sparked my interest in preventing, rather than curing disease, and healing, rather than managing disease through diet and lifestyle.
âMetabolic pathways are interconnected and complex. In my graduate studies I researched the effects of the synthesised vitamin, folic acid, compared to its naturally occurring form, folate, on breast cancer progression, I discovered that even slight modifications to nutrient structure very often have totally unpredictable, long-term effects on the body as a whole.
In science, we reduce and simplify metabolic pathways in order to understand them, and in so doing, we risk seeing only a part or parts of the picture, instead of the whole. I realised that our knowledge of the world around us is only as good as the technology and tools we use to analyse it; what we know is mainly determined by what we can detect and measure, which, when it comes to metabolism, is not that much. We are limited by the technology we are able to develop to detect biology and chemistry in action.
âSo, today's scientific discovery that keeps your skin looking young very well may be the same discovery that kills you years later. Sometimes imbalances in metabolic pathways take decades to reveal themselves. At other times their impact is too subtle to detect; a slight shift in a pathway may make you more susceptible to the effects of UV light or exposure to a carcinogen or virus that may trigger uncontrollable cell growth or cancer. â
ââYour skin care should change with your skin. Does your face cream really keep your skin looking its very best all year round? Do you have negative reactions and/or allergies to skin care products? Do you get frustrated when you travel and you break out immediately because your face cream was ill-suited for the weather? In my case, being on an airplane would dry out my skin and I would develop patches of dry, itchy, flaky skin all over my faceâŠNot conducive to looking and feeling my bestâŠAnd, yet, for years my options were limited and static; I was constantly frustratedâŠSoâŠ
ââI combined my knowledge and passions, pouring my energy into formulating scientific skin care products for exactly what my skin needed. I love crafting specific prescriptive solutions for myself and, now, custom, bespoke products for others. Most importantly, as I paid more attention to my body, I developed a deeper connection with it. You can, too.
âReconnect with you. Bexi's Bespoke Revitalisation enables you to connect better with your body by pooling our collective creativity and using my scientific and research skill sets to develop truly holistic skin care solutions personally formulated just for you using only pristine food grade natural ingredients, therapeutic grade essential oils, the very minimum necessary trace of naturally occurring preservatives, and nothing else.
