In this edition of Stories Matter, we hear a woman affected by Primary Progressive Aphasia share a part of her past as she engages in speech therapy using WORDStim. PPA is a neurological condition that affects language abilities over time, making communication increasingly difficult. The outcome of speech intervention is revealed through her ability to recall and produce fluent and structured speech to convey her message.

Community is more than just a group of people—it’s a sense of belonging, shared purpose, and mutual support. Whether built around geography, interests, experiences, or goals, a strong community provides a foundation where individuals can truly thrive.
But honestly, I’m over the platitudes and empty words. Tell me what you think: Is “community” just a buzzword? It’s thrown around often, but do you actually feel like you belong somewhere—where you both contribute and receive in return?
I wonder if I’ll have the courage to stay committed to this mindset. But I’ll start here, borrowing a line from the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, with a little twist:"Let’s give something we can feel, so we know our love is real."
True community is about creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and valued. But how do we know when we’ve built a thriving community? How do we genuinely see, hear, and value others? It starts by resisting trauma bonding and instead fostering a shared vision.
Recently, two colleagues and I formed a micro-community to support each other. This isn’t surface-level, performative support. We show up, we listen, we offer real feedback, and we encourage with intention.
We’ll be talking about this journey—what it’s been like, what we’ve learned, and why it matters. Join us next Monday, February 28th, and let’s explore what building true community really means.

Every time I listen to my patient I get chills because she was able to break through her language difficulties to share something about her past. She was proud of her family history...more soon.

After a long day, I saw a patient through telehealth. I am astounded by the progress he has made, despite being told by neurologists that he would never speak again. At the end of a long day- for both of us- we have something to really work with. I'm proud of him; and I'm proud of WORDStim!

This thought video is one of many I want to share about my work with people with aphasia and how it has changed my perception of life. For one, I see some aspects of nature through the prism of healing. At the end of this video there is a flower that I photographed. When I saw the flower I noticed how upright it was, at the command of the sun. My message in this video is for everyone, particularly other speech-language pathologists. Simply - we have got to bring the sunlight to the dimness of aphasia. If you have the heart for this work, I thank you for bringing the light. Please subscribe and follow to hear more about how we are succeeding in aphasia therapy. Thank you
