We are happy to welcome pediatrician Rose Paskoff, MD to Northern Light AR Gould Hospital.

Dr. Paskoff completed her medical degree at St. George’s University School of Medicine in St. George, Grenada. She completed her pediatric residency and was Chief Resident at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wisconsin. She is currently pursuing board certification with the American Board of Pediatrics.

Dr. Paskoff likes kids and enjoys working with them. Once she decided she wanted to enter the medical field, she says she always knew it would be pediatrics that would be her passion. She looks forward to taking care of patients from birth through adolescence in our region.

As a native of New York who also has family in New Hampshire, she naturally looked to the New England area to become established as a provider. She found our Pediatric practice to be the perfect fit, with its mix of outpatient and inpatient care.

Dr. Paskoff enjoys the small town feel of northern Maine and excited about pursuing outside activities such as hiking and kayaking. She is also a runner, and she enjoys baking and reading in her spare time.

Welcome, Dr. Paskoff!

How are you doing on getting you or your child’s immunizations up to date? August is National Immunization Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of routine vaccination for people of all ages.

Immunizations have drastically reduced or eliminated many infectious diseases, such as polio, measles, and pertussis. They are crucial to not only help build community immunity, but vaccines also help protect those who are too young for vaccines or those who are medically unable to receive certain vaccines.

Take time this month to check your and your children’s immunization records and make sure that you’re up to date on your vaccines. If you have any questions, talk to your primary care provider.

How are you beating the heat? With temperatures being in the 90s over the next few days, it’s important for you to stay cool and hydrated. Check out some quick tips below to help you stay safe with the high temperatures.

If you or a loved one doesn’t have an air conditioner, or an area of your home where it stays relatively cool, be sure to contact your local town office or recreation department to see if there are any cooling centers in your community. If you are planning to be outside, try to go outside either early in the morning or later in the day to avoid those high temperature times.

If you suspect you or a loved one has heat exhaustion, get to a cool area to bring the body temperature down. If you suspect that someone may have heat stroke, seek medical attention or call 911.

Northern Light AR Gould Hospital recently launched an “Honor Your Caregiver” program as a way patients can show their appreciation for someone who made a difference in their care, while also helping others through a gift to the hospital’s Foundation.

On Monday, a brief surprise celebration was held to recognize the first person who has been honored through this program. Hilary Boucher, PA-C, a transitionist at the hospital, was recognized via a donation by a patient in her honor.

Dr. Jay Reynolds, hospital president, read the nomination to Hilary and those gathered to honor her. In a direct message to Hilary, the patient said:

“You made such a difference to me when I was feeling alone while struggling with unexpected health challenges. Your compassion and check-ins made me feel supported. You were my lifeline during a time when I felt I was drowning in a sea of uncertainty.”

The patient went on to note, “Having access to someone like Hilary after a hospital stay is so invaluable. I can't thank her enough, and I'm so grateful for this service!”

Hilary was presented a certificate and some balloons in honor of the occasion.
Those who might be interested in honoring a caregiver – whether it be a doctor, nurse, or staff person who may have brightened their day – are invited to make a gift of any size in their honor. The amount of the gift remains confidential, and all funds stay at AR Gould Hospital to help with local needs.

Donations can be made online here: https://give.northernlighthealth.org/campaign/652265/donate

How is your vision? Has it been fine? Or have you started to notice a difference? One way to protect your vision is to wear sunglasses outside. Sunglasses are worn to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, reduce glare, and improve vision in bright light. They also help prevent eye strain, headaches, and potentially long-term eye damage. Additionally, sunglasses can shield your eyes from debris and wind. As a reminder, high UV exposure doesn’t just happen on warm, sunny days. It can also happen at any point during the winter, and even on cloudy days.

It’s a great time of year to get outside! It’s also the time to be mindful about heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Here are some quick tips so that can help you can stay safe, and out of the hospital on these warm days.

• Drink plenty of fluids.

• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight clothing.

• Protect against sunburn. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30; apply 15 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours or more often if you are swimming or sweating. Stay in the shade when possible. Remember that even on cloudy days, you can still burn.

• Never leave anyone (human or pet) in a parked car.

• Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day – did we mention drink plenty of fluids.

• Be cautious if you're at increased risk. If you take medications or have a condition that increases your risk of heat-related problems, avoid the heat and act quickly if you notice symptoms of overheating.
