Independent Living is more than a concept—it’s a movement that champions freedom, choice, and equality for people with disabilities. It’s about creating a world where barriers are removed and individuals have the tools and support to live life on their own terms. At RCIL, we believe independence isn’t about doing everything alone; it’s about having the confidence and resources to shape your future.

Herkimer's LIFE at RCIL is making everyday skills more accessible through a hands‑on laundry training program designed specifically for people with disabilities. This WKTV feature highlights how the program helps participants build confidence, learn essential laundry skills, and gain greater independence in their daily lives.

The Resource Center for Independent Living’s Life Division has come up with a program to assist people with disabilities.

RCIL Announces CEO’s Retirement and Incoming Leadership

Zvia McCormick will retire from her role as Chief Executive Officer of the Resource Center for Independent Living (RCIL) in April 2026. Since 2013, McCormick led RCIL, advancing the nonprofit’s mission to ensure a just, inclusive, and equitable world for people with disabilities.

McCormick’s commitment to improving the lives of people with disabilities remained a steadfast center of her career. Under her leadership, RCIL thrived as a consumer-controlled, person-first advocate for people with disabilities. She brought her passion for ensuring people with disabilities have the rights and resources to live life in their chosen communities to every facet of her work, resulting in the expansion and enhancement of the organization’s diverse programs and services. McCormick also built a positive and uplifting work environment for RCIL’s team, most notably by improving wages and benefits for employees.

With this chapter of RCIL’s story coming to an end, a new one begins. Mansoor Shahid, currently RCIL’s Chief Operating Officer, will step into the role upon McCormick’s departure. Shahid arrived at RCIL three years ago with over twenty years’ experience in healthcare, streamlining RCIL’s vast operations to function with smooth efficiency and delivering optimal consumer experience. “Over the past three years, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with RCIL program staff, consumers, and community partners across multiple counties,” notes Shahid. “I’ve learned that improving consumer outcomes requires more than efficient processes. It requires listening, adapting, and building systems that honor autonomy, dignity, and choice. This perspective will guide my leadership approach and inform how I support RCIL’s mission as its incoming CEO.”

Please join RCIL in bidding a fond farewell to McCormick and welcoming Shahid to his new role!

Using Self-Direction to Build a Life in the Community
Independence is more than a checklist—it’s about living life on your own terms. At RCIL, we believe every person deserves the freedom to make choices that reflect their goals and dreams. That’s why Self-Direction is transforming the way people with disabilities access support. It’s not just a program—it’s a pathway to empowerment, flexibility, and true community inclusion.
