One of the most effective mindfulness practices is RAIN. It helps us develop a healthier relationship with our inner experience—ultimately allowing what is present, rather than fighting it or trying to change it.

One of the ways I like to use RAIN is to work with emotions. It gives us a structured way to explore, understand, and get to know what we’re feeling, instead of avoiding or pushing it away.

Compassion is more than just “feeling bad” for someone—it’s a deeper, active response to suffering.

At its core, compassion has three key parts:

1. Awareness of suffering
You notice pain—your own or someone else’s—without ignoring it or turning away.

2. Emotional resonance
You feel moved by that suffering. There’s a sense of connection rather than distance.

3. Desire to help or relieve it
This is what separates compassion from empathy. Compassion includes a motivation to respond, even in small ways.

A simple way to think about it:

* Empathy = “I feel what you feel.”
* Compassion = “I feel what you feel and I want to help.”

Therapy helps you find the path—but you still have to walk it.

We warmly invite everyone from across the nation and the world to join us for a special loving-kindness meditation session with the venerable monks and Venerable Bhikkhu Pannakara.
