🎗️ It's the final day of Endometrosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis is considered a chronic inflammatory disease that is multisystemic - meaning it impacts multiple areas of the body. The challenge is that research is still catching up on identifying which areas of the body are affected.

Lyndsey DuBose, PhD at CU Anschutz is doing research to fill the gaps.

❓ Can cervical cancer screenings be reduced to two per lifetime instead of one every five years? ❓

New research suggests that with increased vaccinations statuses of HPV, women may be able to reduce their cervical cancer screenings to two a lifetime. This is drastically reduced from the current recommendation of an HPV test every five years after the age of 29.

⚠️ But wait, we’re not quite there yet.
The lack of a centralized vaccination system in the US is a challenge. Additionally, barriers to getting vaccinations or the full recommended dosage. Christine Conageski, MD states, “Cervical cancer has become a cancer of access.”

🎗️An ovarian cancer diagnosis rocked her world, but she earned an Olympic medal.

⛸️ Olympic Ice Dancer Piper Gilles was competing in international competitions when she noticed fatigue, nausea, and left-sided pain. Diagnosis revealed a tumor and stage 1 ovarian cancer. Despite the "life-altering news" and surgery to remove the tumor, weeks later, Gilles returned to the ice with newfound fuel.

🏅 Gilles is now cancer-free and won her first medal at the Milan Olympics. Ovarian cancer is the fifth most deadly women's cancer, and Gilles is an inspiration.

🧪 Should I use an at-home test to see if I've started menopause?

There are a plethora of at-home tests available for various medical conditions, but not all are created equal. So what about the menopause test?

👩‍⚕️ According to Nanette Santoro, MD, at-home menopause tests don't share the whole picture. These tests measure follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which rises during perimenopause, but the hormone can change week to week.

⚠️ Please note: At-home tests are not 100% accurate and should not be in place of medical care.

Did you know that IUD placement doesn’t have to be a painful experience for teens? 💡

At Children’s Hospital Colorado, pediatric gynecology specialists are using intranasal midazolam (a mild sedative nasal spray) to help adolescents feel calmer and more comfortable during IUD insertion.

👩‍⚕️ As Dr. Tricia Huguelet says, "Patients deserve to get good, comfortable care.” 💙
