Forest bathing is something I have personally done for years without even knowing it. It is taking meaningful time in nature to wander, sit, listen, feel, and connect back to your senses and allow time and space for the questions in your mind to work themselves out.
After losing my brother suddenly when I was employed as a naturalist at a science center I had lots of time I was expected to spend in nature as part of my job. I quickly realized that the time between nature walks and special programs was perfect for sitting on a log (or wherever) near the water or with a majestic view of our beautiful mountain ranges. I experienced my connection with my brother grew stronger and my acceptance of the situation came faster than I had expected. Feeling the sun on my face, the breeze against my skin, and hearing the water flowing created the most peaceful and connected state I had been in since my world was rocked in June of 2014. I knew I had to share this with everyone.
I stumbled upon the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and found out that they train people to be guides in this practice of shinrin-yoku (the Japanese word that translates to βforest bathingβ). I was trained as a guide in July of 2017 in Sonoma County, CA. Since then I have led walks in Avon, Estes Park, Edwards, Vail and Minturn, CO. I have seen the childlike wonder come back into the eyes of participants. I have seen layers of stress fall to the forest floor. I have seen tears flow, laughter abound, and connections happen in unexpected places.
Forest Therapy is one of the most seemingly simple practices to relieve stress, reduce anxiety and depression, lower blood pressure, lower cortisol levels, and boost mood and immunity. However, with the fast pace world so many of us live in it gets difficult for us to want to carve out time to simply sit in nature. It is my pleasure to help people make time for themselves to connect back to the natural healing of our forests and tune into the deep knowing that we all have inside of us. The forest is the therapist... the guides open the doors.
