in Clark County History: Mar. 9, 1928--- It was announced in the Vancouver Columbian that construction of the 4-story Arts Building was about to begin at 11th and Main streets in Vancouver. The projected cost of this Beaux-Arts style building designed by Day W. Hilborn (1897-1971) was $140,000.00 (about $2,525,051.46 in 2024). However, it was reported in September of that year to have come in at $145,000.00 ($2,615,231.87 in 2024). In 1928, this was the largest building in Clark County.
Originally a Medical Arts Building, this was the first home of The Vancouver Clinic. First known as the Vancouver Medical and Surgical Clinic, they occupied suites 401-410.
The Arts Building was listed in the Clark County Heritage Register in 2015
Photo Description: From the archives at The Columbian, this architect's drawing of the building to be constructed at 1104 Main Street in Vancouver was front page news on March 9, 1928. We want to thank The Columbian for this look into Clark County's architectural history.
