How do I choose a doula?
When choosing a doula, it's important to find someone who aligns with your values and expectations for childbirth. You may want to ask potential doulas about their training and experience, as well as their philosophy and approach to doula work. It can also be helpful to meet with a few doulas in person to get a sense of their personality and whether you feel comfortable working with them.

How does a doula differ from a midwife or obstetrician?

While doulas, midwives, and obstetricians all provide support during pregnancy and childbirth, they have different roles and responsibilities. Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to birthing persons, but they do not provide medical care. Midwives are healthcare professionals who provide primary care to pregnant people, including prenatal care, childbirth, and postpartum care. Obstetricians are doctors who specialize in pregnancy, childbirth, and women's reproductive health.

Benefits to hiring a Doula
Doulas offer support in many areas of your pregnancy. They offer physical, emotional, as well as support for your partner. Doula support has also helped mothers reduce c-section rates as well as less use for medicated assistance, shorter labor and higher rates of success in breastfeeding.
Physical Support
When in labor, you might discover that you need or want to change positions to get comfortable or to help labor progress. A birth doula will know positions you can try. Birth doulas can also provide a comforting touch by giving massages, applying counter pressure, leading breathing techniques and other comforting touches to help you relax. These positions and relaxing touch can help move a baby down and into the pelvis helping speed up labor.
Emotional Support
A simple reduction in the amount of emotional stress that is associated with new parenthood can reduce the need for interventions like cesarean sections, epidurals, and labor-inducing measures. When emotions are high and hormones are raging, it is nice to have someone who will provide a sense of calm to the family and environment. Whether you are having a natural birth or are using medication to help, everyone can benefit from additional emotional support from a nurturing and empowering source.
Partner Support
Whoever is in the delivery room with you—partner, friend, family member, etc—doulas are there to provide support them as well. This allows your support person to be as involved in the birthing process as they’d like to be. Having both physical and emotional support available makes a big difference for everyone involved.
