🏌️‍♀️⛳ Dunes Dermatology at the Tin Cup Classic! ⛳🏌️‍♂️

We had a blast participating in the VCDC Tin Cup Classic this year! It was a great day of golf, laughs, and supporting our amazing Vermillion community. 💙

All proceeds from the event went directly to the Vermillion Chamber and Development Company, helping to grow and support local businesses and initiatives — a cause we’re proud to stand behind!

Thank you to everyone who helped make the event a success. We’re grateful to be a part of such a vibrant and supportive town.

Here’s to a fun and safe summer!

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. May is chosen as a kick off to summer and helps to reach the goals of preventing, detecting, and treating skin cancers early.

The US spends about $8.1 billion annually on the treatment of all types of skin cancer. Over half of that is for non melanoma skin cancers, and the remainder being for melanoma treatment. That means sun related skin cancers such as Basal cell skin cancer and Squamous cell skin cancer can be prevented. Sun protection should be taught to our children in their early years when we have a large amount of our sun exposure. Ways we can protect ourselves from the sun are:
• Avoiding the sun during peak UVA/UVB rays between 10am-2pm
• Wear protective clothing
• Apply a wide brim hat and wear sunglasses
• Use sunscreen at least 30 SPF. Apply sunscreen liberally and reapply every 90 minutes. DON’T FORGET YOUR LIPS!
• Seek a shady spot whenever possible

Sun related skin cancers can come at any age but become more prevalent as we age. These skin cancers can start as pink pearly bumps on sun exposed areas, pink ulcerated spots that don’t heal, and even pink to brown scaly areas that may bleed easily. Monitoring our skin and moles for melanoma is also important. Using the ABCDEs as guidance:
A - Asymmetry
B - Irregular Borders
C - Colors (black or uneven)
D - Diameter larger then a pencil eraser (6mm)
E - Evolving (quick change in size, shape, color)
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends yearly skin exams to help aid in the detection and prevention of skin cancers. Pre skin cancers called actinic keratosis can be detected by trained dermatology providers and treated as a quick in office visit. If you have concerns about spots or lesions on your skin, see your dermatologist. Many skin cancers when caught early are easily treated.
Call Dunes Dermatology Onawa with any of your skin concerns. We are here to answer your questions. 605-422-3000 and choose option 2 for the Onawa location. Let’s have a fun and safe summer! 😎☀️

This week, Dunes Dermatology had the privilege of partnering with Clay-Union Electric Corporation to provide SunX sunscreen and lip balm to their hardworking linemen — the folks who brave the elements to keep our communities running strong.

SunX blocks harmful UVA and UVB rays with a water resistant, Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and paraben free formula that lasts up to 80 minutes. Plus, it’s Lineman’s Glove Tested
(Type 1 Class 2 ANSI/ASTM D 120), so you can wear it with confidence in any environment.

Linemen spend long hours outdoors, and protecting their skin from the sun is just as important as any other safety gear.

We want this to be a reminder for everyone in our community: whether you're working outdoors, farming, walking the dog, or watching your kids' ballgames — wear your sunscreen. UV exposure adds up, and daily protection makes a real difference.

Thank you to Clay-Union Electric for all you do, and for letting us support your team with some much-needed sun safety!
