🌳 This Giving Tuesday (December 2nd), we’re growing something bigger than ourselves.

Every story of hope, every family supported, every connection made begins beneath the surface — with strong, steady roots.

A-BE-C is the foundation that helps our community stand tall and reach higher. This year, we’re inviting you to help us “Grow the Roots” — strengthening the support system that holds it all together.

Your gift doesn’t just fund programs.
It fuels the unseen work that makes everything possible.
It nourishes the roots so our entire community can keep growing.

Let’s build something that lasts. 🌱

Strengthening Global Connections for the Bladder Exstrophy Community

This past week, Association for the Bladder Exstrophy Community (A-BE-C) joined international support organizations from around the world for the first-ever Global Congress on Advocacy and Community Collaboration for individuals and families affected by bladder exstrophy.

The gathering brought together representatives from Australia, South Africa, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, and the United States— all dedicated to improving awareness, connection, and support for those living with bladder exstrophy and related conditions.

The event was kicked off by Dra. Anna Bujons Tur of ‎Fundació Puigvert in Barcelona, whose executive team and staff graciously welcomed participants and provided outstanding support throughout the three-day program.

As part of the U.S. delegation, A-BE-C Executive Director Pamela Artigas and Board Member Janet Gibson participated in discussions focused on strengthening international partnerships and sharing resources to better serve families worldwide. Thomas Exler, founder of Courage to Shine, also joined the delegation, contributing valuable perspectives from his personal advocacy experience.

“This was an important step forward in uniting our global community,” said Pamela Artigas. “By sharing ideas and working together, we can expand the support network available to families—no matter where they live.”

The Congress concluded with a shared commitment among participants to continue collaborating, share educational tools, and raise visibility for the bladder exstrophy community at a global level.

Following the Congress, Pamela traveled to Madrid attend the Asexve – Asociación de Extrofia Vesical, Cloacal y Epispadias Conference (October 31–November 2, 2025), where she spoke about A-BE-C’s advocacy efforts and the importance of international collaboration.

Stay tuned for updates from Madrid and highlights from the conference.

Honoring Janet Rankin (Jan)
15/03/1952-25/10/2025

It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of our dear friend and passionate advocate, Janet Rankin. Janet was a steadfast voice for the bladder exstrophy community and a source of strength, compassion, and hope for so many families around the world.

“Janet’s empathy and unwavering dedication inspired everyone who had the privilege to know her. She turned her own challenges into a mission to help others feel seen, supported, and empowered — leaving behind a legacy of love and advocacy that will continue to guide us.” ~Pamela Artigas

We invite our community to join in celebrating Janet’s life:

One of the highlights of my time in Barcelona was spending time with the leadership and staff at Fundació Puigvert, the only hospital in Spain—and among very few in Europe—dedicated exclusively to urology, nephrology, andrology, and reproductive medicine. Their mission of providing integral, effective, and human healthcare based on clinical excellence, together with their commitment to teaching, research, and training, aligns beautifully with A-BE-C’s vision.

I was deeply honored to be welcomed by Helena Ris Romeu, President of the Patronato; Ramon Massaguer i Meléndez, Director General and Patrono Delegado; Esther Franquet Barnils, Nursing Director (Direcció d’Infermeria); and Anna Bujons Tur, Operations Director (Direcció d’Operacions).

It was especially meaningful to spend time with my dear friends and colleagues Anna Bujons and Dr. Juan Osorio, and to see them in their home hospital after having shared such impactful experiences together during our workshops in India.

I also had the privilege of meeting members of the nursing, psychology, and social work teams, whose compassion and commitment to holistic, patient-centered care left a lasting impression.

Their dedication truly reflects Fundació Puigvert’s spirit of excellence and humanity.
Fundació Puigvert’s recent recognition as an A-BE-C Bladder Exstrophy Center of Excellence places them among the world’s leading institutions supporting individuals and families living with this condition—and it’s a partnership we are genuinely proud to celebrate.

Feeling inspired in Barcelona đź’™

I’m here at Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, walking through one of the most beautiful hospitals in the world — a true blend of innovation, architecture, and healing. Built in the early 20th century, it’s a modernist masterpiece that continues to inspire care and compassion in every detail.

Just steps away is FundaciĂł Puigvert, recently designated by A-BE-C as an International Center of Excellence for bladder exstrophy care, the only one of its kind in Europe. Seeing this connection between history and cutting-edge medicine in person is incredibly meaningful.

I’m so grateful to Dra Anna Bujons Tur for welcoming me and helping kick off our three-day meeting with support organizations from across Europe.

A special thank-you to La Dra Rocio Jimenez and Dr Juan Osorio, who made the tour unforgettable — sharing insights, history, and stories that reminded me how much dedication, expertise, and humanity shape patient care.

Standing in this space, surrounded by history and innovation, is a beautiful reminder of why our community’s work matters so deeply.
