Fifteen years ago, a baby boy named Solomon was born in Uganda with a condition no one could name.
There was no hospital equipped to help him, no doctor trained to recognize what was wrong. His parents, desperate to save him, made the long journey to a small missionary hospital in Kenya. There, Solomon was finally diagnosed with cloacal exstrophy—a rare and complex birth defect—and underwent life-saving surgery.
Since then, ABEC has grown its commitment to children with bladder exstrophy in Uganda. In 2019, we launched the ABEC Uganda Initiative, a team of passionate surgeons, nurses, and social workers who travel to Uganda each year. These volunteers pay their own way, leave their families behind, and work alongside Ugandan medical professionals to perform surgeries, provide training, and build sustainable local expertise.
In 2022, we partnered with Emergency Hospital in Entebbe—a modern pediatric surgical center offering free care to children. It's been a game-changer. But without transportation, many families simply cannot access the help that’s available.
Last year, we served more than 75 children. This year, we expect even more. We want every child to receive care—no matter where they live or what they can afford.

This September, A-BE-C will return to Uganda for our annual surgical workshop. The week will include surgeries, follow-ups, diagnostic testing, and culminate in a Family Education Day—a day of community building, shared learning, music, games, and hope.

Last year, we served more than 75 children. This year, we expect even more. We want every child to receive care—no matter where they live or what they can afford.

Thank you, Dr. Lopez, for such a beautiful reflection on your experience at our conference. 🌟
We were truly honored to have you share your expertise, insights, and passion with our community. Your words and presence made a lasting impact, and we’re grateful for the inspiration you brought to the event.

"For over 20 years, I've presented in public without any problems, and... there I was: nervous, waiting next to the stage for Ted Lee to announce me. This time was different, and I didn't know why, since I frequently give talks. I even teach residents how to do it. Today, looking back, what was different …it was the audience.
This time, more than medical knowledge, the audience had experience; the experience of living day to day with a condition like Bladder Exstrophy. The Association for the Bladder Exstrophy Community had invited me to their annual meeting to talk with families and patients about our Exstrophy program at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.
My anxiety, I understand now, was because it's not easy to try to deliver a meaningful message to entire families, taking into account what they experience. Clearly, this took me out of my comfort zone: the surgical treatment. However, once on stage, seeing their friendly faces and hearing their sincere questions, we sparked a great conversation in the room. From that human perspective, I was able to share my knowledge, trying to make a concrete contribution, and I think that's what made us connect.
Many thanks to Pamela Artigas and her team for the wonderful invitation and for their desire to continue working together on "Exstrophy with Compassion."

🌟 Dr. Evalynn Vasquez, Director of Global Health, Boston Children’s presents a 10-Year Service Award to Lily Artigas 🌟

We were honored to recognize Lily Artigas with a 10-Year Service Award at the conference. From a young age, Lily has shown what it means to lead with compassion. She began by selling jewelry made by women in Uganda to support both the artisans and the A-BE-C initiative. In 2nd grade, she saw a need and took action—collecting over 1,600 pairs of pajamas for children in India so they'd have a change of clothes during hospital stays.

Many of you know her as a warm and familiar face at our conferences, where she’s volunteered year after year with her signature smile and quiet strength—even while managing her own chronic medical challenges with grace and resilience.

Lily’s commitment to global health continues as she pursues a degree in International Studies at Boston University, determined to keep making a difference around the world. Lily, we are proud to walk alongside you and can't wait to see what your future holds. - Dr. Evalynn Vasquez, Director of Global Health at Boston Children’s.

We kicked off our 2025 conference with a powerful gathering of about 15 adults living with bladder exstrophy (advisory board members pictured here). We hope this meetup will become a meaningful tradition—creating space for connection, shared experiences, and real conversations.

It’s incredible to witness the strength and resilience of this group, and how their stories help guide, inspire, and support the next generation. If you haven't already, please connect with us here:

Congratulations to George Hunt, III who was honored as this year's Courage to Shine Award winner at the annual exstrophy conference in Boston.
"Bladder exstrophy is a part of me, but it doesn’t define me. It’s something that happened—something I lived through, not something I live in. And now, I’m eager to give back to this incredible community. Together, we can do great things."
