Texas Association of School Nurses Region III (TSNO Region III) is and affiliate of the Texas School Nurses Organization, Incorporated. The purpose of the organization is to operate as an education organization on a non-profit basis for school nurses, and to promote and advance the quality of school health services and health education throughout Region III. Region III school nurses serve a region of 39 public school districts located in an eleven county area of 10,833 square miles, serving approximately 50,000 students.

* School nursing, a specialized practice of public health nursing, protects and promotes student health, facilitates normal development, and advances academic success. School nurses, grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders that bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potentials (*Approved by the NASN Board of Directors June 2016).

Recent communication with the Texas Board of Nursing indicates the need for school nurses to have a signed physician order to administer OTC medication to students. Please call the Board of Nursing Practice Line with any questions!

Submitted to the Office of the Texas Governor:
I am a school nurse. The executive order disallowing schools to require masks needs to be reversed. Local entities need the flexibility to respond to rates of transmission in their communities. The situation has changed drastically since the order was created, with the Delta variant circulating widely. I want to have our students in person, and keep them in person, but I also want they and their families to be safe. It is unwise to have students returning to school without protective measures in place. This is especially true because many children are not even eligible for vaccination yet. It goes against the advice of every public health entity. See below for links from the National Association of School Nurses, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the CDC. Please read them. I hope they help you to make a decision that is better informed, and protects our children, and the staff at schools.

I encourage everyone seeing this post, to let your voices be heard. Now is the time to advocate for our students.

We had an amazing conference today, with knowledgeable, engaging presenters who taught material relevant to school nurse practice. We are grateful to them for sharing their time and expertise with school nurses and public health nurses of our region. TSNO Region III would like to sincerely thank these presenters: TSNO President-Elect Karen Kotula Schwind, BSN, RN (Jurisprudence/Ethics for School Nurses), Valerie Pachta, NP of Victoria Pediatrics and Adolescents (Pediatric Dermatology Conditions in the School Setting), Lisa Price, NP with DeTar Healthcare System (Pediatric Trauma in the School Setting), and Phyllis Hamilton, LSSP, Region 3 ESC Mental Health Specialist (Mental Health, Crisis, and The School Nurse). A special thanks to our planning committee (see attached list) which included Jessica Heller, RN, BSN, Director of Education at DeTar, who made it possible for CEU’s to be granted. Thank you to our exhibitors (see attached list), and all of our donors and supporters who contributed door prizes, and helped to make this conference possible (see attached list, and stay tuned for additions).
