Mojave Watershed

Mojave Watershed Welcome to the Mojave River Watershed Group! What is MRWG? What is stormwater pollution? Why is stormwater education so important to High Desert residents?

MRWG is an organization dedicated to educating the High Desert community (the City of Hesperia, the City of Victorville, the Town of Apple Valley and other unincorporated areas of the County of San Bernardino) about stormwater pollution prevention. Stormwater pollution, resulting from urban runoff, is a serious issue and is the single biggest environmental threat to the quality of our rivers, lakes and other local waterways. It can have a detrimental effect on public health and harm the well-being of local wildlife. Stormwater pollution is unique in the High Desert due to its geographic make-up. Our watershed flows directly to the Mojave aqueduct which is the direct source of our drinking water. Protecting this precious resource for yourself and your family is vital to our High Desert community. The good news? Stormwater pollution is preventable. Through simple measures, we can reduce stormwater pollution and keep our communities clean. It is up to us to preserve the essence of the Mojave Desert. Learn more about us and how you can get involved at www.mojaveriver.org.

It’s World Water Week and in the High Desert, that means something big. We rely on every single drop, yet so much of our water is lost to waste and runoff. Let’s be mindful to protect what we have and do better for our river, community and our future. 🌎

Spills happen – but letting them wash into the street? That’s a no-no. 🚫

Always keep a spill kit nearby and protect our watershed by preventing pollutants from entering it. You can find one at your local hardware store or create your own!

It’s giving…responsible homeowner energy.
When you’re doing yard work, don’t forget that what you leave behind can end up in the Mojave River Watershed.

Here’s how to do a Responsible Yard Workday the right way:
✅ Sweep up grass clippings and leaves—don’t let ‘em hit the street
✅ Use a green bin or compost pile
✅ Avoid applying fertilizers and pesticides on sidewalks and driveways
✅ Blow it back into the lawn, not the gutter

Tag a friend who still washes their car in the street or driveway because…WE NEED TO TALK!

It might seem harmless, but suds don’t stay put. They carry oil, grease and grime right into the storm drain and straight to the watershed, affecting our community’s water quality. Take it to a car wash instead. 🛢️💧

Puede parecer inofensivo, pero el jabón no se queda en su lugar. Lleva aceite, grasa y mugre directo al desagüe pluvial y a la cuneca afectando la calidad del agua en nuestra comunidad. Mejor llévalo a un autolavado.

Water you doing to help the High Desert’s water quality?
August is National and we’re celebrating by showing our community how to keep the Mojave River and its watershed clean from street to stream. Scoop the p**p, stop the leaks and never let soap hit the street.
