It was an honor to share the stage with Lauren Hess and Dr. Ed Garrett at the AASP West Regional conference today.

More than anything, I was grateful for the chance to mingle with the next generation of mental performance coaches as well as seasoned vets like Mario Soto and Dr. Traci Statler.

Thanks to CBU for hosting a great event and I look forward to reconnecting with the rest of you at AASPs National Conference coming this October!

"While there are benefits that come along with short periods of heightened , we often overlook the tradeoffs that ensue (e.g., inefficiency, less ROI, and fatigue). Learning to step back and create space to just "be," often fuels our ability to create high work that transcends the proverbial scorecard and makes a valuable contribution to the way people approach their lives."

🚨 Research Publication 📄
Grateful to announce our most recent publication that takes a close look at the intersection of religion and athletic identity within the intercollegiate setting.

While we are far from understanding the way religious orientation influences athletic identity, this paper serves as an important starting point that may help student-athletes reconsider the way they approach their sport (and life) in light of their religious beliefs.

A big thanks to my co-authors

On this day, back in 1993, one of my favorite moments in Blue Jays history took place!
However, many often fail to acknowledge the incredible amount of self-trust and composure that served as the precursor to Joe’s WS winning walkoff!

What a great reminder that in sport (and life) we are often just ☝🏻swing away from greatness!

・・・
So another story landed in the media yesterday about one of our elite athletes opening up about his struggles with mental health. There are clear benefits to sportspeople sharing their mental health stories. It normalises that we all have mental health and that being “elite” does not mean we are immune to it.

At present, one of the dominant narratives around mental health has been given its own hashtag – historically this has been very helpful to reduce stigma, validate and normalise people’s experience of mental health.

Yet, I can’t help but think that we have had many years of celebrities, role models and elite sportspeople confirming that they have mental health. Is it now not time to move the narrative on to elicit even more positive change?

As a clinician working in mental health, are we not ready to move on from to ??– struggling with wellbeing and mental health is not a place that has to be maintained. It is an indicator that perhaps it is time to start making some changes in our lives. It is sometimes an indicator that perhaps it is time to start working with a therapist or a psychologist.

Would it not be wonderful if we could start to hear from all of the sportspeople about what they have actually done to manage and work through their mental health struggles ultimately encouraging autonomy, responsibility and personal empowerment for change. We have reduced some of the stigma around having mental health, can we now reduce the stigma attached to seeing a therapist?
