Sometimes, the simplest things hold the deepest meaning.

This lei, 17 strands of lāʻī, fashioned in the hilo style, may appear humble — but its simplicity speaks volumes.

Each strand represents the time, knowledge, and wisdom she’s poured into the organization. Twisted and bound together, they form a rope — a connection — linking years of dedication into one continuous cord.

It’s more than a lei.
It’s a symbol of her journey, her impact, and her growing and her connection.

Who is she? We don’t know her personally but it felt like we did.
We had a conversation with the person who wanted to gift her this lei, learning why they were honoring her and what the occasion was. We listened, so we could understand and put the right intention into the lei.

That’s something we do with all of our lei.

Our client didnʻt know what kind of lei sheʻd be picking up when the day came. She trusted us and couldnʻt have been more excited.

The cherry on top?…when our client shared with the lucky recipient not only reason for the lei, but what each strand represented, itʻs chosen material, and why the style in which it was fashioned.

Come make lei with us.

Meet the Mōhalu Hawaiʻi Team: Jasper🐾

Hey friends, it’s Suki — back with part two of my takeover.
As promised, here’s your official introduction to the newest member of the Mōhalu Hawaiʻi Team: Meet Jasper — heʻs the new guy. Not even a year old and into almost everything. But I guess heʻs kind of cute 🙄

He’s curious, learning about our space, and still figuring out some basic rules — like not playing in the drinking fountain (not acceptable, we’re working on it). He’s also discovering what a lei is… (Note: lei are not toys. Also still working on that.)

His official title? Junior Fluff Consultant
His current duties include:

🌿 Keeping a close watch on all bird life from the windows while securing the perimeter
😴 Sleeping like he owns the place (he does not)
🙆🏻‍♀️ Lots of big stretches
🌀 Zoomies during nap hours
👀 Watching me way too closely (I’m flattered, but also… please stop)

Like many of our guests, he’s just beginning to learn about lei. Learning with wide eyes, soft paws, and a few too many pounces. He’s got a lot to figure out, but I’ll be supervising closely from my usual spot on the couch.
We’re doing a lot to teach this guy the ropes (and boundaries), even if he wants to climb them instead 💕. He might be the new kid, but I’m still the boss. 😌
We’ll give him a little time, then do a full review of his performance. For now, he’s on a probationary cuddle contract.
Welcome to the ʻohana, Jasper. Just remember who runs this place.

Meet the Mōhalu Hawaiʻi Team: Suki 🐾 (Takeover Edition)

Aloha friends! Suki here. I’m taking over the account for a couple days to introduce myself properly and share a little update on things around here.

I’m the senior supervisor at Mōhalu Hawaiʻi. You won’t hear much from me (unless you catch my signature raspy meow), but just know I’m always watching… usually from a safe distance on the couch mid-nap. 😴

My role? Quality control, mostly. I make sure the energy stays calm, the vibes are chill, and that no sunny spot goes unappreciated. If you’ve seen me lounging during a class, just know I’m working hard supervising with my eyes closed or with an ocassional slow blink. Don’t worry, I’m leaving the teaching to the humans, I’m just here to keep things mellow and purrfessional 🐱✨

An update on things around here. It’s been a little while since we lost my sister, Trixie. Things haven’t quite been the same without her. She had a way of making the world feel calm, cozy, and just a little more magical. She was my primary humans lei making partner and my favorite nap buddy. We still look for her sometimes and we miss her every day. 🐾💔

But there’s a new young kitten in the mix now. Heʻs still learning the ropes (and the rules). I’ll introduce him soon. Let’s just say… I’ve got my paws full. Until then, I’ll be right here on the couch supervising all of the things.

Stay tuned to meet the next member of the crew soon!

As graduation season 2025 comes to a close, we canʻt help but reflect on where it all started. In 2019, an opportunity presented itself to shift how we honor this milestone.

Maile is one of the most cherished lei. But do we understand why? Or has it become something we reach for out of habit? With the cultural significance of maile and its growing scarcity as more is gathered without proper knowledge or care, we felt called to do things differently.

At the time, graduation lei weren’t part of our original offerings, but mindful practice has always guided our work. When we chose to enter this space, we did so with intention — to celebrate this meaningful milestone with a lei that honors cultural traditions, showcases the skill and artistry of the lei maker, and embraces sustainability.

We adapted and offered and alternative, lāʻī, allowing us to preserve the spirit of maile while allowing the plant to rest and regenerate.

We’re not saying to stop using maile. There’s a time and place for it. But we do hope folks choose with intention and mindfulness: Do we need it, or do we just want it? Does every celebration, groundbreaking ceremony, grand opening, VIP arrival, or destination wedding require maile to feel special?

Sometimes, the deepest love means stepping back so what we cherish can continue to thrive.

If you have been so lucky to have worn maile or possibly have gifted maile to someone, we encourage you to learn where it comes from and how it’s gathered. The more we know, the better choices we can make — for our people and our forests.

Now in our sixth year, we’re grateful to continue this journey. Mahalo to for embracing this approach.
