Merrie Monarch 2026 Behind The Scenes

A glimpse at the hands behind the lei. Each lei created for a specific person and moment it’s made for.

Coming out of Merrie Monarch week, we are sitting in so much gratitude and a little bit of exhaustion in the most fulfilling way.

This is the week where lei makers are quietly moving behind the scense. Working long hours to support all things Hula. Late nights, early mornings, sore fingers, cracked nails—every strand, every flower, every detail is done with intention, knowing it will be worn in moments that matter. It’s not light work. It’s physical, it’s emotional, itʻs rooted in intention.

When you’re in the middle of it, there’s no thought of content or photos. The work comes first. The hands stay busy. The focus stays on honoring the purpose and making sure the lei is at itʻs peak when it’s needed. Timing is everything.

To all the lei makers out there —seen and unseen—I see you. I know the hours, the sacrifice, the heart you pour into this work. This is more than adornment. This is Hawaii.

Mahalo to the Merrie Monarch Broadcasting Team for allowing us the honor of adorning you on Kahiko Night. Not everyone made it into the photo but weʻll take what we can get✨

It’s been one week since we said aloha to our girl Suki. Nineteen wonderful years was not nearly enough time.

If you’ve attended our classes, you most likely met her. She was always observing quietly from the couch. She was complimented on how beautiful her markings were and how young she looked. No one ever believed she was 19. She was the quieter one but when she meowed, she meant it. She had a raspy meow that sounded like she enjoyed a nightly glass of whiskey and eyes that could stare deep into your soul.

She enjoyed the simple pleasures in life: sitting in the morning sun, long naps, a fluffy blanket (or three, at 19 she could have as many as she wanted), nightly brushing, and belly rubs. She didn’t care for soft, dainty affection, she preferred a hard wire brush and a good tug on her ears.

She kept a tight schedule. Every night at 9:30pm she would leave the couch and wait in the hallway to let us know it was time for bed. Then every morning (before my alarm) at 4:45am, I’d hear her nails tapping on the floor as she made her way into our room to wake me up at 5am. Thanks to her, I don’t need to set an actual alarm.

Just like Trixie, she hated car rides, but 80’s soft rock seemed to mellow her out a bit. &Luther .

When we welcomed Jasper into our home like any strong, independent gal, she kept her boundaries up while he tried every single day to be her best friend. Not a day would go by where he didn’t try to pounce on her back or sneak a little closer while they were napping. She let him in slowly and I knew she secretly loved him.

She knew which nights I had hula and demanded her own lāʻī when I got home. As soon as she saw it, immediate purrs. She was an aggressive purr-er. She loved hard.

The house is quieter now, and we miss her daily routines. Weʻll remember to enjoy the simple things in life, just like she did — the warmth of the sun, long naps without guilt, a good brush and a little Purple Rain. Life will never be the same without her but so grateful for the last 19 years.🐾🩷🤍🌈

Here’s to the New Year ✨

Lei demonstrations are always a good time. A chance to share but really and opportunity to practice our craft. These moments reminds us why we do what we do and the importance of bringing it back to the basics every time we sit down to make lei. And somehow, the process teaches us something new each time.

Looking forward to more learning, creating, and making lei together this year 🌿💛

Aloha friends, Suki here with my official end-of-year report. After careful review, I’m pleased to share that Jasper’s onboarding has been approved and he has officially passed his probation period. 📝🐾

The Junior Fluff Consultant is growing fast and still learning the ropes. These days he’s also napping a lot and somehow taking up all of my space on the couch. If he would just stay on his side, that would be ideal. A girl needs her beauty space. ✨

He has also clearly learned the work schedule. Jasper knows the end of his workday is promptly at 3:00 pm, at which point he is fully ready for snacks.

Our human has been especially busy this year, making lots of lei and teaching workshops. Naturally, Jasper decided he needed to be part of that too. He’s been learning about lei by sitting in our human’s lap, keeping her company while she’s hard at work. I’m pleased to report he’s doing a very good job observing and not playing with the really pretty flowers (see attached video). Quality supervision at its finest.

2025 hasn’t been easy though. Losing Trixie left a quiet space that still feels heavy some days. We miss her so much and not a day goes by that we don’t think of her. While nothing replaces her, Jasper has brought some much-needed happiness back into our home, reminding us that joy can still exist alongside missing someone or some-kitty you love.

Jasper is very skilled at headbutts, surprisingly good at catching bugs, and always has a lot to say.

In other news, Jasper recently discovered cinnamon rolls. Yes. Cinnamon rolls. Which means our humans are officially on their toes, keeping all baked goods safely hidden at all times.

As this year comes to a close, we’re grateful for the lessons, the love, the new connections and the moments that carried us through. Mahalo for supporting our small business. Wishing you all a happy New Year, and we can’t wait to see you in 2026. ✨🐾

Sometimes, the simplest things hold the deepest meaning.

This lei, 17 strands of lāʻī, fashioned in the hilo style, may appear humble — but its simplicity speaks volumes.

Each strand represents the time, knowledge, and wisdom she’s poured into the organization. Twisted and bound together, they form a rope — a connection — linking years of dedication into one continuous cord.

It’s more than a lei.
It’s a symbol of her journey, her impact, and her growing and her connection.

Who is she? We don’t know her personally but it felt like we did.
We had a conversation with the person who wanted to gift her this lei, learning why they were honoring her and what the occasion was. We listened, so we could understand and put the right intention into the lei.

That’s something we do with all of our lei.

Our client didnʻt know what kind of lei sheʻd be picking up when the day came. She trusted us and couldnʻt have been more excited.

The cherry on top?…when our client shared with the lucky recipient not only reason for the lei, but what each strand represented, itʻs chosen material, and why the style in which it was fashioned.

Come make lei with us.

Meet the Mōhalu Hawaiʻi Team: Jasper🐾

Hey friends, it’s Suki — back with part two of my takeover.
As promised, here’s your official introduction to the newest member of the Mōhalu Hawaiʻi Team: Meet Jasper — heʻs the new guy. Not even a year old and into almost everything. But I guess heʻs kind of cute 🙄

He’s curious, learning about our space, and still figuring out some basic rules — like not playing in the drinking fountain (not acceptable, we’re working on it). He’s also discovering what a lei is… (Note: lei are not toys. Also still working on that.)

His official title? Junior Fluff Consultant
His current duties include:

🌿 Keeping a close watch on all bird life from the windows while securing the perimeter
😴 Sleeping like he owns the place (he does not)
🙆🏻‍♀️ Lots of big stretches
🌀 Zoomies during nap hours
👀 Watching me way too closely (I’m flattered, but also… please stop)

Like many of our guests, he’s just beginning to learn about lei. Learning with wide eyes, soft paws, and a few too many pounces. He’s got a lot to figure out, but I’ll be supervising closely from my usual spot on the couch.
We’re doing a lot to teach this guy the ropes (and boundaries), even if he wants to climb them instead 💕. He might be the new kid, but I’m still the boss. 😌
We’ll give him a little time, then do a full review of his performance. For now, he’s on a probationary cuddle contract.
Welcome to the ʻohana, Jasper. Just remember who runs this place.
– Suki 🐾
