✨ immediate postpartum ✨ is often not talked about at all during prenatal visits with your provider. We have so much knowledge online with Google but it leaves people overwhelmed or sometimes scared by all the result.

I love encouraging parents to ask questions about what this looks like with your provider before birth:

the Placenta
What is your standard procedures, what to expect and what choices do I have?

Ask about: Pitocin, Cord Traction, time limits they may have, fundal massage, Active vs Expectant management and the protocol for keeping your placenta if you’d like.

Cord cutting
Ask what your options look like? What does delayed cord clamping means to your provider or birthing location standard?

💫 We also cover all of these options and explore them in our birth classes!

What surprised you the most in that immediate postpartum time? Leave them below 👇

Jaundice can change the way that first week looks with your newborn. It causes yellowing of the skin. For many babies who have it, only requires an increase in feedings and monitoring.

In more extreme cases jaundice is treated with this blue light therapy as shown here — always refer to your baby’s pediatrician for more information.

This can be a mental strain and also physically hard to establish a good latch with baby when bottles may be recommended. I recommend bringing a hand pump to the hospital for those just in case times.

Going into birth & postpartum aware of these possible outcomes can minimize the feeling of being out-of-control.

Did your baby have jaundice?? And if so were you prepared for how it changed what immediate postpartum looked like?

My first breastfeeding journey with Wren was during 2021 when there was limited support groups when we were in Portland.

I didn’t know that breastfeeding could be without the bleeding, sore n*pples, clogged ducts, and nights crying when I wasn’t getting a letdown. It started with lactation support in the hospital that wasn’t helpful or educational. Being pressured to use the n*pple shields and pumps right away didn’t give me the confidence to trust my body. I felt the need to bottle feed even after feeds to get her more “full”. And I would see social media posts of huge freezer supplies and thought the amount they were pumping was what my body should have been doing. The expectations we set on ourselves can be so tough.

I breastfed for 7 months and whether you chose to or not it so helpful to have someone to go to and ask questions and find what works best for you!

🤍 August is National Breastfeeding Month — everyone’s experience is so different, let’s support each other. A fed baby is the best 🤍

Birth can be beautiful, peaceful, quiet, empowering. 🦋

Finding what makes you feel the most safe is going to help boost oxytocin & serotonin. This minimizes stress hormones that put you in a state of fear and survival.

For me, this was my partner and doula’s trust in me, wave sounds, and knowing how to say “no thank you” and “not now” especially in a hospital setting.

🦋 This can start with finding providers that listen to your concerns, big or small.

🦋 build a support team around you that trusts YOU and knows your birth preferences

🦋 take a birth class to gain the knowledge to go into birth informed about all the options and outcomes

We have nitrous oxide (aka "laughing gas") available at the birth center. It can be used during labor or during any invasive procedure. Nitrous can help make you more comfortable during an IUD placement, a pap, or even during suturing tears after birth. Ask your midwife to learn more!

✨ 4 phrases for a more empowered birth ✨

There are going to be many new things that come up even starting with your first prenatal visit. It can be so helpful to have these ready when talking with your provider.

So many women will feel overlooked, not taken seriously, or like “standard” procedures that are happening during labor are required. It is important to trust your providers and these phrases can help bring up important conversations that lead to empowered and informed decisions.

✨New location for our pregnancy & postpartum walks ✨

We will now be meeting at the Murr Field parking lot and do a lap or two on the walking path. With more shade, this will be great for the sunnier days in the Spring & Summer!

This will give newly postpartum mamas a chance to do a single lap or double. & benches along the way for feeding baby.

See you Friday at 10am 👋
