It's everyone's favorite time of day... gym time!! 🥳

Though our group does follow a structured routine, we of course give our kiddos the opportunity for sensory breaks - to explore equipment, regulate and get some heavy work in, and practice social skills and language in a natural environment.

We love making story time interactive by having each kiddo hold a puzzle piece of a character/animal/item found in our book of the week - when we get to the page that features that animal, they're asked to bring it up to the board 📚🧩

While a seemingly small adaptation, this allows our sensory seekers to move their bodies while engaging with the story, our preverbal kiddos to show their understanding without necessarily using words, and every child to practice language, motor, and attention skills 💛

Sensory bins are every peds OT's must-have tool, targeting so many skills at once, including:
🌻 Imaginative/pretend play - scoop and pour beans/lentils into cups using spoons to "feed" the animals
🌻 Self-feeding skills - using spoons or tongs in play promotes the foundational abilities needed to use utensils during mealtime
🌻 Tactile skills - engaging with "messy" media and finding items hidden inside promotes development of our touch system, which is important for self-care tasks and reduces picky eating tendencies
🌻 Social skills - asking for turns or trading items, observing what others are doing and imitating, and parallel playing with others
And so much more!

Our little sprouts are fine motor rockstars 🥹 making winter hats 🤶 in 75 degree CA weather ☀️🤣

Cutting with scissors and lacing beads promote bilateral coordination, or the ability to use both sides of the body together in a coordinated way 👯‍♀️ Although we as adults often don't even have to think about this "skill", it lays an important foundation for our kiddos' independence with handwriting, dressing, managing fasteners, cooking, schoolwork, and more!

"The Mitten" is a story about forest animals squeezing into a cozy lost mitten. After reading this book at circle time, each child created their very own mitten craft! 🧤

We love using books to guide our theme during social skills groups as they promote language skills, emerging literacy, and school readiness 📚

🌼 Groups target social skill development, emotional awareness, and motor/sensory processing abilities alongside peers
🌼 Class meets once per week for 10 weeks from January 7 to March 11
🌼 Sessions take place at - pediatric occupational therapy clinic with a fully equipped sensory gym and separate fine motor rooms
🌼 Enrollment is limited to 5 kids per group to ensure your child receives individualized attention
🌼 Group is led by an OTR/L and experienced volunteers
🌼 We are neurodivergent-affirming, which means enrollment is open to those of all abilities!
