Here's a 🌟BIG🌟 thank you to the Warrensburg Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints!

They recently supplied some local dyslexia facilities and therapists with supplies to support patients with dyslexia, providing them with binders, notebooks, folders, dry erase boards, markers, and more!

Your thoughtfulness and generosity toward the local dyslexia community is heartwarming and greatly appreciated. Thank you, friends! ❤️

Children with dyslexia are often bright, having great cognitive skills and imaginations. However, expressing themselves through writing is typically a challenge.

Written communication is the toughest area of communication to master. When considering why a child is struggling with writing, there are many areas of language to consider to determine the root of the problem.

Watch out! A child might be struggling in more than one area of language!

Did you know people with dyslexia often struggle with word finding? They know what they want to say, but sometimes expressing themselves verbally is difficult.

Here are three self-cueing methods to teach your child to overcome word finding difficulties.
🌀 Visualization: have your child visual the object they're trying to name and describe its looks
🌀 Semantics: teach your child to explain the object by answering 'wh' questions about it or recalling a recent experience with the object
🌀 Function: have your child describe the use or function of the object they're attempting to recall

With these strategies your child will likely name the object themselves, or will have described it well enough that others can help name the object for them.

Words are more than words! They are represented in the brain in multiple ways! 🧠

🔤 Letters and word shape

💡 Meaning of the word

Different parts of the brain are responsible for different word representations. Because the brain of someone with dyslexia works differently than the brain of someone without dyslexia, dyslexic individuals can naturally miss out on certain word representations.

That's why re-training the brain through skilled therapy and application of the science of reading is important for these kids.

Active learning requires several important cognitive functions, including:
1️⃣ Attention: the ability to attend to a specific event, even with other distractions present
2️⃣ Working Memory: the ability to take in information and apply it quickly
3️⃣ Processing Speed: the ability to retrieve information in a timely manner
4️⃣ Executive Functioning: the ability to plan, self-monitor, problem solve, and demonstrate flexible thinking

Dyslexia and attention deficits can negatively impact several of these cognitive functions. Luckily, with the right accommodations, children can be supported to overcome their difficulties.
