Over the past year, I've been asked probably 50 times by clients for a magnesium spray-on remedy for pain relief and sleep. I rarely work with products that have water in them because I refuse to use chemicals in anything I make, and when you add water you must use preservatives. Almost always, anyway. Sometimes I make water-based remedies for a client's acute complaints, but those typically only last 1-3 months, depending. I've been developing a spray I released yesterday. To make this complex recipe, I tinctured comfrey root and leaf, mountain arnica flower and willow bark in medicinal grade 190-proof ethanol, which came out the most gorgeous forest green color. I infused menthol after straining. Separately, I infused Zechstein magnesium flakes into heated distilled water.
Then the magic happened... I blended together the tinctured extract and the water infusion, bringing the ratio to 50/50 so it would remain naturally preserved and shelf stable. I added vegetable glycerin to slow the alcohol evaporation and to keep skin soft, aloe to moisturize and soothe irritated skin, and MCT oil to balance the harshness of the alcohol and to give essential oils (lavender, frankincense, eucalyptus, ginger) something to bind to. Finally, I finished with a natural emulsifier in sunflower lecithin. The result, this gorgeous neon green potion that feels amazing when sprayed on aches, pains, and inflammation. The relief is instantaneous. Big drool and huge sigh of herbal relief. It’s amazing what you can accomplish with plant allies.
