“When you leave connection and get pulled into a pattern of protection, where do you usually end up?” -

Polyvagal Theory helps us understand how our body is wired to seek connection and safety. When stressors exceed our ability to cope, sometimes our nervous system can get “stuck” in a response that was once adaptive. Understanding our nervous system is often the first step towards healing our nervous system. And doing the hard work of healing our own nervous system creates healing in our relationships, community, and world around us❤️‍🩹

It is not uncommon to have a strong propensity to minimize, push down, and deny the pain and dark spots in our lives. This may be a result of an internalization of narratives that may exist in our families, spiritual communities, and societal systems that invalidate and deny pain. At points in our lives, the parts of ourselves that push us to deny pain may have served strong, adaptive purposes like keeping us safe and connected in our family and/ or community.

When we turn towards our pain instead of away in therapy and allow our pain to be witnessed, our bodies remember what we are born knowing: we heal when we feel in the presence of other safe humans.
